  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2012 Genesis Sedan Technology package. the engine is a 3.8L. My mechanic suggest me to replace the timing chain because of a tension piece that may fail. I want to keep my car for another 3 to 4 years so I'm making a small overhaul on it. I already changed the discs break and pads for better than before, all the fluids (brakes, cooling system, transmission etc... My car has 170 000km (about 110 000miles). Did any of you guys ever needed to replace the timing chain

My timing chain tensioner did fail and I had to replace my 3.8 engine. My mechanic located an engine for me and put it in. He also mentioned Hyundai redesigned the timing chain tensioners and he replaced the tensioners in the replacement engine.

What mileage did you have on your car when this happened and what type of driving did you do (mostly city or highway)

It happened at 215k and I do mostly highway driving.

Was there some kind of a noise before it happened or did it happened suddenly. Note that I only have about 110,000 miles. I don’t want to change the timing chain too much before it’s time. It would take me another 8 years to make your kind of mileage. By the way, I want to thank you for taking the time to reply me.

Well it happened all of a sudden but a symptom of needing your tensioners changed is if your hear a ticking noise when you start your car. You will usually notice the ticking sound when you start the engine in the morning and it will last for a couple of seconds. There should be YouTube videos regarding hearing that ticking sound. I believe there may have been a recall regarding the tensioners but I'm not certain about that.

@kraze4u Have you had your car since new? I'm wondering if a previous owner ever changed the timing chain, or was the first one done at 215K?

Hey Johnny, out of curiosity where you getting a rattling sound at start up which lasted about 2-3 seconds and then no noise after that?

I wanted to thank you guys for all your replies. It just happenned that I went to a Hyundai Dealer and the service person was looking on her computer and put down my VIN and she said that my car has the proper timing chain tensionner and that I should stop worrying about it.

To reply to the rattling sound, no I never heard such a sound. By the way, are some of you guys ever cleaned the valves on your 3.8l v6 engine and if so, after how many miles

I read on another thread that the rattling sound is due to there being no oil check valve so on startup its kinda dry
