Been here awhile...
I did not see any hits for this in search. I was pleasantly surprised that my G90 had perfect rims when buying it with only 12K miles.
But then I saw a 3/4” chunk missing from the, unknown to me at the time, rim protector on the Michelins. I thought I would have to replace the tire, but after I read the article on tire rack it turns out they are the equivalent of sacrificial anodes on boats. I was still perplexed how the tire was damaged, but the rims were mint. Never knew this tech was built into tires, see link below.
Anybody nervous about riding with missing rubber on their rim protectors? They also prevent sidewall damage.
