Tire problem - Feathering and cupping

Hi All,

Need some expertise here before I purchase new tires. I got brand new Michelin Primacy tires when I got the car. Tires currently have 17k miles on them and have been rotated every 5k miles. Wheels where also balance twice. Did the alignment 5k miles ago and below are the results:

As you can see, the outside edge is feathered, the inner edge and middle are cupping. All 4 tires are equally messed up. No problems while driving except for the noise while driving slow speeds and very loud when stopping. It does not seem like the alignment was so bad that would have such impact on the tire wear. Correct me if I am wrong.

I would like to purchase new tires but don't want them to end up like these... I know this was brought up before and some of those Michelin tires were recalled. I also know that bad suspension parts will have an impact on a tire wear but I don't seem to have any suspension problems (car has 54k miles now). I addressed the tire problem during last oil change and the guy wanted me to mention this before the next oil change so they can check the suspension and maybe hook me up with new tires free of cost (I have awesome service adviser). Please let me know what you think and what your tire experience is.

IMHO If it were my mine, I would get a 4 wheel alignment from a reputable shop before buying new tires. I'd also consider new shocks and struts before the alignment. Worn shocks/struts can cause tire cupping. I replace them at 60 to 80k miles on my vehicles and always feel a significant improvement in ride and handling afterwards. I'd be interested to know whose already replaced shocks/struts and which brand they went with. I plan on doing it soon.

Recent experience has taught me not to depend on my local Hyundai dealer to align my 2015 Genesis. It cost me a whole set of Michelin MXV tires that were worn out after 20,000 miles. Go to a independent alignment specialist. It is well worth the investment.

Thank you both for your input. I will probably get new tires and do alignment again before putting on the new tires.

Any tire recommendations...I log about 35/40 miles per year. I have the AWD 2015 Genesis 3.8. Have ripped through Coopers and Michelin Primacy's rather quickly.

Just upgraded my 2015 AWD last week, added the newer 19" G80 Sport wheels with Pirelli P Zero's and I must say it drives SO much better now. Best so far. The original Hankooks flat spotted badly every day, horrible winter tire. I replaced those with Yokohama YK740 GTX' from Discount Tire. The car always drove really squirrely on those, would not recommend them. The rear two were almost toast at 15+k miles and were so bad last winter I threw them away and went with 4 new Michelin X-Ice'. This Pirelli set is for summer only and I'm very happy with the investment.

What are you looking for in a tire? Summer only or All-season? Grand Touring or Ultra High Performance? Pricing constraints?
