  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am thinking of tinting my white pearl 2010.I live in south florida and the heat is coming. only thing I dont want to make it look like a pimpmobile with dark window against the white.Any suggestions?

Formula One Pinnacle is a state of the art (ceramic) film that is not too dark and provides superior heat reflection. I have the Pinnacle 50 VLT (visible light transmission percent) that is not at all dark, but for south Florida the 35 VLT might be better (although a bit darker). There are also some very expensive films from Huper Optik that are even lighter, but provide decent heat protection with state of the art films.

Get it done soon, because prices tend to go up in the summer.

Uber Updike best heat blockage, lowest loss of vision. Hard surface. Cost a little more but,. been in Arizona long time and tried most of em and love this stuff.

I got the Pinacle 35 with my grey V-6. It looks great, although I find that at night my side window visability is less than I would prefer. If I had it to do again I would probably get 50 on the front windows, or maybe even all around.

I have only had it since September here in Ohio, so it is hard to comment on the heat, but I am moving to the CA desert in July, after which I should have plenty of experience.

I didn't even go anything near the darkest with our white Avalon...but we've gotten pulled over three times because of it and warned once. The tinting does look more obvious on a white car...but good IMHO. Looks like we will have to go back and lighten the front side windows. I really liked when they were the same darkness as the back, but don't want to be paying a ticket for that luxury.

I have Formula One Pinnacle 50 all around and I love it! Highly recommend it if you want something not too dark.

I am exactly in this same position. I have the Pearl and want tint, but not the "pimp my ride" tint. 35 is the max here in Massachusetts. Is there any standards between 35 and 50?

I don't need anything for heat.... just privacy.

Do you mean is there any film with a VLT that is between 35 and 50? Yes there are some (but not many). If you don't care about heat, then you may want to look at high quality smoke film. However, be careful because smoke films are typically made from dyes and can sometimes fade, so get one that is guaranteed not to fade.

But actually, most of the high-tech films like ceramics and metal films have a slightly mirror effect from the outside looking in to provide more privacy than a dyed film in most situations. Just visit some tint shops and look at different tinted cars to see the various films yourself.

You also can find a smoke film (blackish in color) in Carbon. I use it all the time, as the majority of the customers I tint aren't really interested in a metallic or ceramic film due to price, but the carbon film isn't expensive and it's a lifetime warranty and won't turn purple like as a dyed film would. I used 35% carbon on my car pretty much just because a metallic film doesn't go great with a black, car but I have metallic film on all my other cars.

Metallic films can reflect radar/radio and mess with reception of radio and radar detector. That is why they have fallen out of favor.

True carbon black would be ideal. It is added to all kinds of plastics to block UV. It can never fade. It works by pure visible and UV absorption, and would get hotter than a material that works by reflection. It effectively would turn UV and visible light into IR. Not sure if that would make a difference.

Yes, and ceramic films have replaced them (such as Formula One Pinnacle and many Huper Optik films).

I still use Metallic film on many cars. People with silver, or grey colored vehicles love the look of the film/paint together, as I do also. The only car i've tinted that I have known to have a problem with the metallic film was a Nissian Ultima TPMS. The customer didn't mind the light one.

I mostly use the carbon film because it's lifetime warranty and also not expensive.

The ceramic film is a much better choice, but pretty much unheard of in my region, plus many people that I tint are a first time customer to window film and would be turned away at the price of ceramic films.

Thanks for the information. Do you think or can a shop do VLT 50 on the back window with the shade, and 35 all around? Or is that a dumb/bad/wasted of money idea?

They can do anything your want, although some people have the rear window darker than the others, so the tint shop may scratch their heads a little when you request that. The rear window is slanted more and gets more sunlight than the sides, so many states actually allow it to be darker than the others.

If you can live with 35 on the side windows, I would go with 35 on the rear.

If you tint your windows you are required to become a drug dealer/pimp. There's no way around it. You then must join the ITFD union, wear a gold chain around your neck and on your Genesis key chain. The "I Tint for Drugs" union now has a PAC on Capitol Hill. Yes it costs you money each year but police know never to give you a ticket-- Our logo is "tint or be gay"--

Not if you use a 50 VLT film. Looks classy. Even a 35 is fine. Darker than that, then yes, one is required to be a drug dealer or pimp (your choice).

My car is going in on Tuesday for tint. The guy mentioned that he could put a strip on the front windsheild.... should I opt for this? It is not an additional charge and he said it follows the glass "curve" and doesn't look bad.

What do you all think?

Well, it's really what you want....The factory windshield has a strip, but having one added would darken it of course. The strip could also be used to "extend" the sun shade effect. Keep in mind some states have a limit on how low the strip can be, and some states state that none can even be applied.

As Scott mentioned, Genesis already has darker tint area at the top. Tint film strips tend to look cheesy because the difference is abrupt and not gradient like the built in tint strip.
