  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Took my car to a race track, does this car have too much tire spin or am I doing it wrong?

I have noticed the car being too tail happy since the purchase, not a huge deal. I took it to a race track a few days ago, I've never been to one before so I'm a complete noob when it comes to racing.

I have tried both Sport and Sport +. I understand that Sport+ has more tire spin but I just wanted to test.

Now I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but does Sport+ provide more power to the engine compared to Sport? I have noticed that but I'm not sure if I'm right or wrong.

In Sport, I still get a lot of tire spin from stop to launch (no launch control), I have tried not flooring it initially, but I haven't found the sweet spot. If I don't hit the gas hard it doesn't go fast from stop, so I felt like I'm stuck between tire spin at launch (but it does very fast after the tire spin) or not hitting the gas hard but it doesn't have an aggressive launch.

There were cases were the tires literally just kept spinning in place for a few seconds until I released the gas.

I have raced with a BMW 340i which has a similar horse power to the G70, and I got mostly smoked from stop to launch due to tire spin.

The car did way better if we raced from about 30-40mph, and I was faster in that case.

It's possible that my tires are getting old (I've had the car since July).

I'd love to hear your feedback on this, do you get too much tire spin on launch compared to other cars? If not how do you get rid of that problem?

I have a 22 3.3L too. Sport and Sport + should provide the same amount of extra power. Both open up the exhaust baffles on new models and add the 3 extra hp. Sport + just makes the shift logic a bit more aggressive. Is your car AWD or RWD? Both will be semi tail happy if you're really whipping it, but RWD will obviously be very tail happy in a car w almost 400 hp. If you do have RWD I would look into the tires you have and the reviews, as that will probably make the biggest difference. My g70 has AWD and I have yet to ever spin, even in the rain. The stock Michelin A/S are actually pretty nice.

need to get the driver mod.

any car can smoke the tires on a track. you need to learn how to drive the car without smoking them.

if you dont want to do that, get better tires so you can just mash the gas and not have to worry about too much tire spin.

Check and adjust your tire pressure. On the track, stock pressures may not be the right way to go. Maybe you have too much in the back and lowering could provide more grip but it will be a balance with cornering pressure too..

Did you say you beat the M340 on a roll or just did better?

I had the stock Michelin summer performance tires which are apparently one of the best. But maybe they are old now.

I have the RWD.

I beat it on a roll every time.

What tire pressure should I use? Right now they are about 33-34 cold, they get up to 36-38. In hot weather they get to low 40s.

Maybe try 30psi cold and see how they do.. check the sidewalls for scrubbing.

Interesting you beat the M340 on a roll.. are you tuned?

It's not an M340, It was a 340i which has very similar HP to the G70.

With RWD you may need to drop the rear tire pressure even more, maybe around 25?
The tires being worn should help on a relatively smooth track, more like having slicks (as long as you're not down to the cords 😉)

I imagine with the tire pressure, it's a trade-off between traction at launch and rolling resistance once you've hooked up.
Let's see those sidewalls wrinkle 😂

This car is indeed a bit tail happy, for fun.

Sport+ turns off traction control.

This car has enough power to spin the tires on RWD, so it needs either an upgraded driver or AWD to avoid spinning tires at launch. I recall the AWD has better 0-60 time due to traction.

G70 launch control doesn't let you built boost to protect the transmission, while the BMW can built boost in launch control, thus you get smoke every time. Some have defeated the transmission protection for launch control, but they also damaged their transmission after a few launch.
