  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Torque Sensor out on Rack and Pinion system, Must entire system be replaced at ~ $ 8,000 to fix? On a 2018 G80 with 73K miles?

I own a Genesis G80 AWD, 2018 model with 73K miles, and my power steering failed. Repairs of about $8,000 or more are required just to replace one sensor which, I am told, is embedded in the rack and pinion system: The Torque Sensor. And hence the need to replace the entire R and P unit - a very expensive repair. Residual value of the car, I estimate would be between $13 to 14K after the above expense. Does this sound correct, or, am I missing something?

I have a 2018 g80 ultimate awd, had my R and P unit replaced under warranty after it was sticking in turns. Cost to dealer $2600.00

Warranty work (parts and labor) is reimbursed to the dealer at less than non-warranty work. It does not include the "stick it to/steal from the customer" tax/fee. This is why dealers will typically deprioritize warranty work preferring higher paying non-warranty work.

$2,600 USD even for warranty work (parts and labor?) seems rather inexpensive. A few years ago, I was hearing ~$5K from my local dealer (Southeast U.S) for the non-warranty cost (parts+labor). The Steering gear assembly (rack and pinion) retails for ~$5,170USD (outrageous!) online today.

I had the sticking problem too, bit out of warranty. Dealer never drove my car when I traded it in dbut have hears of very high cost to repair so I dodged the potential headache.

Did you buy the car new or used? If new, I would think it's covered under the 10 year warranty.

Steering box is not covered by the 10 yr warranty. My 2018 g80 (I am original owner) was one month past the 5yr warranty and Hyundai covered it.

That 10 year warranty is only for internal parts of the engine, internal parts of the transmission, internal parts of the differential(s), and maybe a tiny bit more. Most powertrain warranties would also cover engine electronics and several other parts (Genesis does not), but I can't image that any of them would cover the steering rack.

I learned recently that having Foundation coverage on my homeowners policy doesn't cover a failing foundation, either. At least not in my case.

Figured a 'drivetrain' warranty would cover what it takes to 'drive'. Guess not.

You have to read the fine print on warranties. With exclusions/limitations and the lousy service I've been getting from my local dealers these warranties are not worth as much as I thought when I purchased vehicle new.

I have determined the 10 year / 100K mile warranty does NOT cover ...
- Any steering component. My steering rack is starting to stick/not return to center as reported by others in this forum.
- Turbo Charger oil lines (I had one leak /break at 62K), but turbochargers ARE covered under 10/100 warranty (go figure!).

Yeah, I found that one out the hard way (foundation erosion due to a failed drain pipe under the slab). They only covered anything once water damage inside the house was found.

@ Jarrett: I'm assuming Hyundai dealership diagnosed your issue. If so, have they or you yourself checked the battery especially for loose post.
Ive had a similar issue with my R&P with a failure code on my ODBII scan tool that was intermittently sticking or popping when turning. Found that a loose battery post was the culprit, haven't had any issue since, that was over a year ago...

I had the sticking problem with my 2018 and replaced the rack & pinion under warranty. I recall being told that the parts cost $6000.

I finally resolved the issue with the Genesis G80 (2018) power steering rack and pinion assembly. All the problems were due to a live rabbit using my car engine bay for shelter. The animal was chewing wiring at multiple points (chewing to keep it's teeth growing too much and maybe for nourishment). All modules in the PT-CAN were not communicating, nor the right/center park distance control sensor (chewed as well), and the wires to the wiring to the steering rack. A live rabbit was found there. I had installed a "remanufactured" rack and pinion assembly before this discovery. After all wiring repairs, the steering works fine with no error codes. Tomorrow, I take it in to the local Hyundai for alignment (all Genesis dealers have closed in my state, New Mexico). Question is whether the original rack and pinion assembly's replacement, which was done earlier was unnecessary. I wonder if it can be tested on a "test" rack of some sort to check if one of those wiring cuts cause the torque sensor failure reading to be thrown out in error? Total cost to me was about $ 4,300, before realignment. Lesson: ask for complete review of the wiring before trusting a reading.

The issue was entirely caused by a rabbit in the engine compartment that chewed wires connecting the rack and pinion control modules. I even got a picture of the rabbit that the shop took!

No Genesis dealers in New Mexico?? Not good...

Just did a search and per the below source, there are 17 states or territories without Genesis dealerships.

Florida has the most at 32, CA has 18, and TX has 15.

Sorry for getting sidetracked.

Does comprehensive insurance cover any of that?

I didn't apply to my insurer. Thanks, I might pursue that after some months has elapsed.
