Touch up paint

Has anyone had to use touch up paint on their genesis? My wife's genesis has quite a few chips and I was looking at dr colorchip but they don't have the exact paint code for the platinum metallic, which is AU. I have used lanka before on other cars and the result is ok, but have heard from different people that the dr colorchip system works very well. Anyone have any experience they want to share?

I haven't used the touch up paint that I referred to in the discussion you referenced above...too cold up here in New England to tackle that.

I too am curious as to best practices though when it comes to applying touch up paint. I recall some sites that provided tips (Autotopia?), so any insight here will help me as well...I've got a few rock chips that need repairing.

Interesting - I got mine directly from my dealer matched by my VIN. And the tube I got though my dealer has the clearcoat on one end of the tube.

Did you buy one?

Yup. I got the Platinum. It has a brush on one end and the pen type applicator on the other. No clear coat. So far, I've only used the pen.

I have used own touch up paint before and it never works, it doesn't blend well. The reason I was thinking of the dr colorchip is because it is a system and after you apply the paint you go over it with some chemical and a cloth and it is supposed to smooth it out. I was on another forum where a member used it and it the pictures he posted he got great results. The site doesn't have the exact paint code but has one listed that is supposed to match. I guess I will just have to get it and try for myself.

Your dealer can order a touch-up tube in any of the Genesis colors. Includes clear tip at one end of the tube.

I have the official Hyundai USA pen, which has the clearcoat.

It's made in Canada and available for all colors.

It's not a perfect application in any case, but at least it prevents rust. Also, it did a reasonably okay job of covering the minor scratches on the rear bumper (blame a poorly designed parking garage in Las Vegas, and the fact that I had my parking sensors off at the time and not looking at the camera due to impatient motorists honking).

The Korean Auto Imports pen is from Korea, and a different product altogether. Dunno if its manufacturer is a Hyundai OEM supplier (even if only for KDM).

It was either $13 or $18, I can't remember. But definitely under $20. I plan on using it this weekend before a complete detailing to remove the bazillion swirls the dealer inflicted (Sterling Blue). This will involve clay, compounding, polish, then wax with Zaino AIO, Z5, then Z2.

I'll try to take pictures when I'm done and post them here.

I just received mine today from Korean Auto Parts (shipped from AZ). The instructions are in Korean. How did you get the pen end to start flowing?

Press down on it to fill the pen tube with paint. Then use it like a pen till you need to push down again.

Actually, I never read the instructions. I'm a guy

But, that's how it works from personal experience.

I tried pressing down on a fairly hard surface and the pen side did not move and I was afraid I would break the tip, but I guess I will try again.
