Towing with Sedan

I have a small boat, motor, trailer - doesn't weigh more than 800 lbs. We like to fish now and then and I really don't want to have to buy another vehicle just for the 5 times a summer we want to fish. Has anyone put a hitch on the V6 sedan and towed anything. The manual says not recommended, but does that mean I can't do it, or really just not recommended. Could this screw my warranty.

Check you rear bumper and supports. A hitch install may be difficult. Also, if ou plan on selling or trading the before 200,000 miles or so make sure the hitch can be removed and no signs are left that a hitch was on the car.

The owner's manual may say "not recommened," but it should also list a maximum towing weight. I don't think there would any problem with 800 lbs if properly balanced, but double check in the owner's manual.

I have the Curt hitch on my 2010 4.6. I tow my motorcycle out to Denver 1 or 2 times a year. My guess is that the bike and trailer together weigh about 1100 lbs. So far no problems. Dealer has not commented on the hitch and it has been on for several services. The only problem is that the hitch lessens the departure angle and will sometimes drag on steep driveways. It bolts to the frame rails above the mufflers and requires that you drop the rear pipes to gain access. The Kia Borrego used the same drivetrain and was rated to tow several thousand pounds.

I'm sure you can tow a small boat no problem with the Genesis. I personally would rather just get a beater truck for such duties however. Seems unseemly to tow a boat with a $40k luxury car....

I could not find a trailer towing capacity number in my 2009 Owner's Manual, but found the following advice:

• Don't tow a trailer during the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km) of operation.
• Do not tow a trailer while the compact spare tire is installed.

Also, towing a trailer is considered to be an extreme driving condition, so that means oil changes every 3750 miles, etc.

So obviously, trailer towing is allowed, but there should be some specifications regarding the maximum trailer weight.

Not sure, but that looks like it may be for towing the car, not for towing a trailer.
