If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I'm going to be hitting a small local track this Sunday and besides the JB4 on Map 2 with 93 octane everything else is stock.

Has anyone been to a track with their G70's? Any experiences you care to share? I'm curious how the brakes are going to handle. Also - do you guys experience heat soaking? That was a big deal on my previous car (which used air to water cooling system), not sure if this is applicable to a air to air system like ours.

What kind of track, a road course? Depending upon what kind of speeds you hit, I would expect you may suffer brake fade if you're running the factory, non-Euro pads. Also you'll likely end up with brake vibration afterwards, due to uneven deposits on the rotors. With the semi-metallic Euro pads, or an aftermarket equivalent, the brakes are great. This was Car&Driver's experience (and mine as well, although it was from "spirited" driving, not tracking.)

It's a small and mostly slow track and I won't go 10/10s nor won't do too many laps back to back.

But yeah I suspect I'm going to be hitting brake fade after a couple laps.

Any links to these pads your referring to? I might get them for next time.

Thanks!

There's a whole thread (maybe more than one!) on the brake vibration issue, and the factory part numbers for the Euro pads are given there, along with discussions of various aftermarket alternatives. I would check it out.
Be prepared, they ain't cheap! 😯

You always think you won't do 10/10ths, and then the red mist descends, haha.

I remember getting into a little stoplight-to-stoplight drag race with my future wife's uncle forty years ago - right past the local police station 🤣🤣 The right foot took over control for a few moments, luckily without incident. Yes, I won, haha.

If it's a small track, it'll most likely be more technical. With lots of turns and short straights, braking load won't be as great.

Also, instead of stabbing the brake pedal hard late diving into corner entry, it would be best to downshift rev-match and let the engine help absorb some of the braking load into a corner. Even if you are slower with your corner entry because of it, you'll be in the power band with the right gear rolling on the throttle exiting the corner... and be smoother with that brake-in throttle-out transition.

As the old racing adage goes... slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Out of curiosity, what's the tire size on the 2022 SPs? Test-drove a 2020 today, and it had 225/255s, so not very track friendly at near 4K-lbs, no? Hope the 2022 has 235s in front, which would be adequate IMO. Heck, the Santa Fe Calligraphy I bought today has 255/20s, which is more than it needs.

Tracked the car twice so far. Upgraded to aftermarket rims and softer compound tires. Car handled quite well. The first time I tracked the car I had no brake fade. Second time I tracked it, on the second session I got brake fade and shut it down. I use dynamic friction semi metallic pads. I will track the car again in 2 weeks, and I will upgrade the brake fluid to Brembo HTC64 high temp fluid with new dynamic friction pads.

What you mean it shut down? I was wondering about the brake fluid too, it was something I upgraded on my previous car.

Will know more tomorrow, but I guess it depends how hard and how long you keep pushing.

I've been to this track many times with other cars and usually do a warmup lap, 2-3 hot laps and a cooldown.

Let the car cool off for like half and hour and then go again. Nothing super intense, plus the weather is looking like it's going to rain so I'm going to be going slower regardless.

PS: anyone from Ontario interested in meeting up at the track? In going to Toronto Motorsport Park tomorrow, Sunday May 15th after 5pm.

Not my G70, but i attended a pre-launch track day back in ‘18. It was an autoX track, not high speed circuit. Still though, it was a hot summer day on asphalt, and we were beating the sh!t out of the 3.3T AWD’s. Each session lasted ~15 mins and then they did cool downs. Brakes probably didn’t get hot enough to suffer fade, these would have been the stock ceramics - not the Euro pads. Stock fluid, stock PS4’s too.

I’m sure a higher speed circuit would have been different, and brakes could have been an issue unless they swapped to Euros and higher temp brake fluid. No issues with the ECU, other than the cool downs.

At the end of the session, they loaded up each G70 with a pro drift driver and drifted around the circuit. that was a blast, and the G70 handled it very well. The drifters were all impressed with the chassis and balance, even with 3 passengers.

Funny thing is that after a few days of flogging the ~6 G70’s they had there, i was told they’d probably just change the tires, maybe the pads, and then list them for sale as demos. Reason #27 not to buy a demo…

Stock 225/255 tire sizes? The chassis attitude should be understeer, right? Thx.
Tracking tires are 245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rear. Firestone firehawks. Use stock wheels and sizes for every day driving and swap out on track days.

Shut it down, I mean I pulled it in, and skipped the 3rd session of the day and went home. It was at the end of that fast straight that I got the fade. BTW that speed was stock, with JB4 Map 2 I reached as high as 128mph at the end of the straight.

Just got back from the track. What a blast! What a car!! So controllable, so balanced!! Plenty powerfully with JB4 on Map 2 and 93 octane.

Brakes felt decent but I didn't push too hard, would do a max of 3-4 hot laps and couldn't detect fade but I didn't wanna push it. Also no heat soaking even though it was a pretty hot day - a bit problem with my previous car (Q60). Oil temps were decent too.

This car would be a beast with stiffer sway bars, better tires and brake pads/fluid. Debating if I should take the plunge and upgrade...

Other than that I was completely blown away how it handled corners, guessing the eLSD made a huge difference in comparison to my previous car. The car could put the power down hard even on the slow part of the track. Can only imagine with stickier tires and stiffer bars/endlinks.

At the end of the day I was all smiles and just wished I could keep pushing the car more and more.

Genesis: Impressive what you've built here, a dad mobile that can hold its own on a race track in stock form. I love it! BRAVO! Can't wait to go back.

Fun fact, I was faster than my buddy's Camaro SA V8 with 6 piston brakes and Eagle F1 tires.

In our search for a G70, we came across cars that have rather weird wear patterns. One had heavily scored brake rotors - all 4 corners - but brand new looking tires and very low mileage on the odo (like less than 70 miles). We pretty much concluded it was a demo fleet mule. Still, I have trouble believing even a heavily flogged car can have rotors scored that badly in less than 70 miles. So who knows what else they'd done to "refurbish" those cars for sale.

After that, we basically skipped early model year ('19-'20) G70s with low miles that had been titled in Fountain Valley, Calif. whenever we come across them.

That's more like it. Ha ha. And nice that nothing rubs with 2 sizes up. Hey, do you use the paddles for the track, or leave it in auto in sport or sport+?
The difference in handling between the 2 sets of wheels/tires must be huge, right?

Just got back from the track. What a blast! What a car!! So controllable, so balanced!!
Good to hear. May I ask what tire pressures cold you were running at the track on your stock wheels/tires? And what was the ambient temp range? And did bodyroll feel excessive, or not that bad? And same question how you drove the car: paddles, or auto mode, and on which driving mode? Thx.

I got lazy and didn't lower/adjust it much. It was hovering around 42psi all around when hot. I'm sure lowering it a bit would've helped.

Amb temps were around 30c/86f but not humid, quite pleasant actually. Car did not heat soak at all.

Body roll was noticeable, especially that my precious time at this track I was on a car with stiff sway bars. But still, it wasn't super noticeable and like I said, the car handled corners really well. I'm still considering getting Eibachs and better endlinks, they make this car feel like it's on rails. My only worry is that it doesn't completely remove it's playbility and keep it a little tail happy like it is now.

Drive mode wise, I started with paddles (which were great) and then switched to auto on Sport+ and noticed that it was mostly good except for one turn where I wanted to downshift early to engine brake. If I had good brake pads/fluids and I didn't need to rely on engine braking I think auto on Sport+ would be great.

Thank you very much for that report. I'm really looking forward to getting this car. Sounds like it's exactly what I was looking for, with the exception that I wanted it quieter cabin, but guess nobody does that on a car this small. At least it's something I should be able to correct to an acceptable level myself in the future, if Pilot A/S4 tires don't bring the racket to an acceptable level. And it's rare to find a small sporty sedan this luxurious, this sporty while elegant at the same time, and that handles well. There's no perfect car, so the skinny and low front tires is a 'zonk', but not a big deal. The closest competition I could find was the Infiniti Q60 red sport, but man, it looks ultra dated everywhere compared to the G70, which is no spring chicken. Ha ha. I didn't even want to drive one, so immediately dropped it after just looking at it inside and out. The G70 has aged mostly well, and the refresh made it much better IMO. I'm almost sure Genesis will screw it up on the redesign, since the GV70 feels like a grandpa vehicle now, starting with that awful steering wheel IMO. And you can't beat the freaking price, especially at MSRP, like I got it. Well, stupid dealer ordered $400 lighted sills, which is money down the drain, but nothing I could do about that. At least I didn't have to pay for extra paint charges, but wish I did. Hope I'm not disappointed with the plain Alta white color (instead of Uyuni white), but at least it has the sandstorm interior I really wanted, so that's okay. And it was the last car dealer was getting in months, so had to take it blindly (no test drive). Going back to the Q60, couldn't believe it's 6 grand more than the G70, and not even close in equipment. Hope to keep the G for a long time :). A few more days of wait.
