  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Im buying a 4.6 with nav for 39,200. I have a 2005 Infiniti g35 coupe, sport package, 19", and moonroof, with 36,800 miles. The NADA value is about 20k and KBB aroun 17,500. I took it in today to get appraised there ( after a week of trying to negotiate the value), and after they were done appraising it, he told me to come outside for a second and show me what they came up with. He pulled out some sonar paint gun thing and asked me if the car had any paint work (As far as i know it hasnt, i bought it used about 2 years ago), he showed me that the paint was thicked on the hood and drivers side door. Now it was completly unoticable, ive owned the car for 2 years and it never crossed my mind, the paint is beutiful. He made it seem like a pretty big deal, and then told me they could do it for 15,500. The initial offer last week was 14,000, and it seems like they wont go any higher. Is the paint issue worth thousands? Is it normal to get thousands under trade-in value?

Different thickness of paint usually mean the car was invloved in some sort of accident. When you return a leased car they usually check the thickness of paint as well. Don't know what the impact on resale value but there will be an impact for sure.

Once again, the whole market is depressed. I've personnaly found that KBB, Edmunds, etc do not accurately reflect the market. YES your dealer may be trying to rip you off. That's what dealers do, it's how they make money.
Anyway, my Passat was worth 20k by all measures. It turned out to be worth 16k in todays market. Fortunately I was in a lease and had no problem turning it in.
Did you try Carmax?
The 39,200 sounds good though.

The car was never in an accident. It has a clear carfax. I would like to go to carmax but the nearest one is hours away. I feel like there just trying to find a way to justify them screwing me out of my money. Im going to email a different hyundai dealer and see if they have the car i want and wee what they offer me on my trade.

Carfax does not have a record of all accidents. Depending on the state, they may have a record of accidents where the police were involved, but no guarantees even in those cases. Carfax will generally have any record of the car being totaled, stolen, or involved in flood damage.

I echo this comment regarding Carfax. For the most part, it isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Two of the cars I've owned in the past were wrecked prior to my ownership of them, and the reports didn't show up on either Carfax report!

I like the idea of trying CarMax for establishing value. They are very open about their entire purchase/trade process. If they sold new Gens, I would have bought it from them as I had such a great experience buying from them in the past.

Remember, dump Carfax, but keep CarMax!!

I once traded in a BMW that I had repainted because the Florida sun had ruined it. It had not been in an accident. The dealer told me it would have been worth more if I had not had it repainted even though the paint job was absolutely perfect.

I think they were really looking for a way to low ball me.

Right now I have another BMW in a shop to be "restored". There is no way to make it look good without painting it. The Florida sun has made it look like someone sand papered the entire car.

If you read the Carfax claims carefully, they don't claim to have all accidents in their reports.

Any paintwork on any cars especially luxury cars kills the resale, people dont want to buy re-painted luxury and those that will are folks who can only afford but so much, real buyers wont pay big dollars for repainted lux cars. Thats just the way it is, all dealers are not always looking to rip people off and it goes to show that your cars aint as good on resale as you thought.

That disclaimer was an add-on at a later date (after the reports had been out for a while). I'll bet it was added due to a lawsuit at one point! The early reports that I had didn't have such a disclaimer on them, but as you've correctly stated, the new(er) ones do.

Ultimately, it didn't matter in this case. I drove both vehicles to nearly 300,000 miles on each one before I got rid of them.
