  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looking to trade my 2012 Genesis Sedan 3.8 for a 2015 Genesis Sedan 5.0 Ultimate. ANY ADVICE WITH HELP. YES OR NO. Let me know if I should be worried about anything. The 2012 has 128,000km and the 2015 has 71.700km with the remaining factory warranty. What should I look for.

In the US, the warranty on the electronics was shorter so check that. It may be better to pay a little more and go for a 2016 if that is the case. Otherwise, nice car.

In Canada I think the warranty is 5 years /100,000km comp. 5 years /100,000 powertrain. 5 years / 100,000 basic emission . 8 years / 100,000 major emission. 5 years / unlimited anti perforation. Do you know if this has remote car start. or do I have to buy the Blu link subscription.

Remote start is only ever A) third party install or B) via Bluelink. The factory option will never include a key fob remote start mechanism.

I would buy an extended full comprehensive warranty that covers electronics since the remaining factory warranty you will receive will only cover the engine and transmission internal parts. Electronics will be out-of-pocket expenses as well as hoses and other chassis components. The electronic shocks for the 2015 5.0 cost $1000 a piece, not covered under the power-train warranty. The radio is just as expensive as well as the sunroof.

An extended warranty cost about$1500 which can be factored into the car loan for a few more dollars a month.

The comprehensive warranty has limitations, and audio/nav systems are one of them. You should definitely look up the specifics. The 2016 has a better electronics warranty but you may be able to extend the 2015 like carguy said. It's the Hyundai Platinum warranty and it's available on CPO cars.

For purchasing a 15 you might want to know this...

I've contacted the dealer where I bought my 15 5.0 and inquired about purchasing an extended warranty since I like the car enough to keep it longer and don't really see a huge advantage to purchase a 2019 or 2018 demo.

Interesting conversation. Not sure if they're being straight. Here's what they said...

"It was a pleasure talking with you earlier. Here's a quick summary of the extended coverage process:

  1. Bring the vehicle into service for an inspection to ensure it meets Hyundai's standards and requirements, and perform any potential services that are required to bring it up to the certification standard required to extend the warranty
  2. Choose a 1,2,3,4 or 5 year warranty plan (each year gives 20,000 kms additional coverage) that fits your needs. Most likely you'll be looking for premium plus which covers the vehicle comprehensively. We can go over your options in more detail when you're here of course, but as of today the cost for the additional 5 yr/100,000 km premium plus coverage is $4310 + HST."

What isn't in his followup email is the cost of the inspection which was somewhere around $100. Also, he said it would be better to bring it in sooner rather than later since things like brakes/tires would be checked. Huh?? What does that have to do with an extended warranty since it is assumed there is no coverage for brakes/tires anyway. Are they just looking for service work?

Not sure if it's wise to invest $4310 + 13% tx for the additional 5yr even if it is bumper to bumper? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Thoughts?

They always try to jack up the prices on warranties. I would recommend bargaining . Experienced folks could step in and recommend a fair price for 5 years of warranty.

If you are planning on keeping the car until the loan is paid off then yes, if you have a high chance of trading up while financing, no. I believe this because the Genesis value depreciate very quickly so you will be an additional $4k in the hole if you decide to trade the car in the next few years. The trade-in value for our cars are horrible compared to retail. I bought an aftermarket warranty through USAA that was about $1500 dollars that cover my Genesis bumper-to-bumper with a zero deductible that covers 5y/50k miles. My Genesis had 52k miles when I bought it so I am covered to 100k miles bumper-to-bumper. Good deal in my opinion, so I just added about $1500 to my total car loan. I would not pay $4300 for similar coverage .

Talk to your bank and see what extended warranty options that they may have which could be much cheaper than the Hyundai coverage. Just my opinion.

Does the USAA extended warranty for $1500 cover the radio head unit and all electronics? If so then it sounds like a fair deal. The extended cpo warranty I was offered was over $3,000 which I thought was too much.

Yes. I have full comprehensive coverage that includes the electronics. It is like the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. The only diffenrce is that I can get a free paid rental car from any rental car company if the dealership or repair shop do not provide a loner car. Hence, more flexibly for getting my car repaired and obtaining transportation.

Note: I have noticed that you can weigh a car's reliability by the cost of the extended warranty with my bank who uses Assurance extended warranties. I have noticed that BMW and Mercedes extended warranties can cost nearly $5k for full comprehensive coverage when I checked my bank, while the Genesis warranty is less than $2k for full coverage. Therefore, I bet that the 2015 Geneses has a very good reliability rating with the warranty companies. The only issues that I have noticed or read about has been mainly the rear-view camera and a rattle in the sunroof. Not many issues have been reported on the 2015 model. I have noticed some felt tape in my car in some places like the center console mounting tabs so the previous owner must had my car rattles corrected before I bought it.
