  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have had my Genesis 4.6 with 67k,for over a year now and it has had this issue for a while but now seems to be more consistent. When slowing to a stop it sometimes jerks when down shifting to 1st gear. Also when taking off it does the same. If I press the accelerator hard it seems to slip or jerk into 1st gear on initial take off. All other shifts ok. Oh also on hard acceleration the ESC light flashes on and off, it sort of lunges through 1st and 2nd gear.

Could it be the transmission or a sensor of some sort? Dealer could not duplicate it last year at 62k. Am I looking at a tranny? It is out of warranty.
How much would a transmission cost to replace?

There was a genesis transmission discussion a few months ago.

I have a 2013 v6 sedan. Around 3rd gear and 4th gear it would slip when changing gears (in automatic mode). the issue came and went. Basically, think of driving a stick and holding the clutch pedal in an extra second, then dumping it when you shifted in and out of 3rd and 4th gear. The engine would rev all the way up to 3k or more before the transmission would grab.

I had it at the dealer for regular service. Spent about 20m describing it to them before they understood it. They'd never heard of it (not surprising). In the end, they actually noticed something during a test drive and did another test drive with a computer hooked up and saw a problem.

They replaced the transmission. Had to wait a week or 2 for the part since Hyundai doesn't like stocking parts.

Yeah, I had a loaner Sonata for about 3 weeks.....

I have a 2011 4.6 (same engine and transmission) and had the same issue about 18 months ago, right at about 75k miles. I'd slow my car to a stop sign and the transmission would do a hard 2nd-to-1st drop down when either finally stopping or rolling forward on the gas.

Did some research here and elsewhere and the consensus was that the ZF 6HP26 is pretty robust and used in a lot of Euro high end vehicles. The issue seemed to lie with the concept of "Sealed for Life" fluid. While Hyundai does not even have a dipstick, there is also no service recommendation for the transmission fluid, only "Check". How does one do that with no dipstick??? When used in BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and others, this was not the case. Wisdom seemed to indicate that this fluid should be changed regularly. That is what I chose to do and the issue was resolved.

What I did was a trans fluid exchange at a local Goodyear center that I trust, using a Robinair Fluid Exchanger. I chose not to drop the pan (somewhat for cost and somewhat that I didn't feel the risk warranted it) and this may have been a bad move, not replacing the pan means the same filter is in there as new. We'll see if I turn out to be a goat on that one.

I used 12 quarts of fluid through the transmission cooling lines. I know that it doesn't get 100% of the fluid, but certainly was enough to notice the difference and solve the issue. Another choice I made was to use ZF Lifeguard6 fluid instead of the Hyundai brand. Able to find it from California Transmission Supply Company for $200 for a case of 12. ($16.66 / qt rather than Hyundai $$$$). Also, the owner's manual states that the 4.6 transmission can use any ATF M 1375.4 compliant fluid. HOWEVER, when you dig into lots of Synthetic or conventional ATF maker's documentation, they almost all have exceptions for this transmission. I stuck with the ZF fluid. They made it. They should know.

YMMV, but I plan on keeping the car for the foreseeable future and it seemed like a worthwhile investment.

2009 - 2011 V8 used a ZF 6-speed transmission. The transmission alone is about $12,000 (not including labor). But you might be able to find one in a junk yard (most of them are online now). ZF is a German company that supplied this transmission to BMW and others.

2009 - 2011 V6 used the Aisin 6-speed transmission. Aisin was created as a joint venture between Toyota and Borg-Warner to create RWD transmissions used in Lexus and many other brands.

Starting in 2012, the Genesis sedan uses the Hyundai 8-speed transmission.

Be very careful when getting a shop to replace the fluid. Even though both the ZF and Aisin transmissions use synthetic fluid, they don't use the same kind and you need to make sure to use the correct fluid. Replacing the fluid on these is not considered to be a DIY job.

I bought a used 2013 3.8 Sedan after my 2009 Sedan. Immediately started feeling transmission "over-revving" on up-shifts. First dealer reset the Transmission control unit twice which temporarily solved the problem only to have it return. Second dealer I went to was able to "record" the transmission acting up. They were approved to replace the transmission under warranty. Hopefully will get the car back today, on my birthday. Thanks Genesis forum for helping me with this issue!

The ZF transmission should be serviced per the ZF website. They manufacture it so they should know. Car mfg. don't care after the warranty is out. Hence changing fluid is not listed as a regular service.

Would you know if cutting off mufflers and put in straight pipes would void the warranty for that service? Having same issue.
