  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've read some posts of other members experiencing the same problem. However, it seems as if the "FIX" is not apparent.

My vehicle will start up and drive normally most days. However, every once in a while my 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan has an issue identifying which gear it is in. For example; if you pull the shift knob back to "D" the dash still shows that is in "N".

Once you release the shift knob it kind of "floats" between N and D. It doesn't stay engaged/seated in the "D" position.

I've read that this could be the shift cable assembly, the shift linkage, a possible shift cable assembly that is misaligned, etc.

Has anyone experienced this issue before and actually identified the problem causing it? Or know of anyone that has? The transmission appears to be absolutely fine because once it does identify the proper gear, the car drives perfectly fine with no issues.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Im having the same issue constantly.
Mine began Immediately after a mechanic used the "Shift Lock Release" to move the car as battery went dead. Mechanic has no idea.
The shifter felt mushy, non-precise and has tough time going down into D.

So after happening a couple of times, my vehicle finally tripped two trouble codes.

P0955 and P0706. My vehicle goes into the shop tomorrow to be looked at so I'll update if they find anything out regarding those two codes

Following. same problem with 2010

I took my genesis to a local shop, see below for the description of work.

After diagnosing the shifting problem, the technician isolated the problem to the shifter cable pivot adjuster on the end by the transmission. The end of this cable was seized, and the technician unseized the cable, reset the P0955 and P0706 codes and test drove, everything normal.

After I picked the car up, I immediately noticed a difference in the shifting/gear lock problem. Unseizing that part of the shift cable assembly seemed to be the solution to my problem. The shop later sent me quotes for a replacement Shifter Cable Assembly, and Inhibitor Switch. All in for roughly $600 CAD.

Waiting for the shop to get the parts to get the car in for the work.

I had almost exactly the same issue and bought a cable thinking that would fix it. The cable was perfectly fine, but where the cable connects to the shift linkage on the transmission there is a small bushing that needs to rotate freely, but it was rusted solid I guess sometimes it would break free, causing her to act differently, but to fix the issue I removed the bushing cleaned up the rust greased it put it back in, and the car works perfectly.
