  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Guy's,

Background:

I have a 2013 Genesis BH Sedan R-Spec with 223000 miles. I had the hard shift we have all experienced or heard about. My transmission was so bad it felt like I had been rear-ended by someone other than Hyundai. I was forced to drive in manual mode through 5th gear. After that it changed gears as you would expect.

I was very frustrated because my car, despite the miles, looks like an almost new car and the engine runs beautifully. In fact, days before I made a plan to fix the tranny myself, I had the car over 140mph and she never hesitated for a second.

I did what everyone else has done and bought OBD code readers but none had the ability to talk to the car in the required way. I found the TSB on the solenoids and even though I am not a mechanic, I felt I could do the job. I also felt the tranny was going to have to be replaced from me screwing it up or it failing on it's on. Swapping the transmission out did not seem like a great plan as I might have ended up with another bad tranny like other owners have.

I was working for a Dodge dealership about this time and I asked the service manager to see if they could access the TCM in order to reset the transmission. I was told the scan tool and the car would not talk to each other. We had a Hyundai sister franchise close by so I went there and was told the same thing. Il don't understand why they said there computer would not talk to the car.

So I decided to try to fix it myself. I found the solenoids on Amazon and ordered them. I figured the car just might relearn how to shift on it's on with 2 new solenoids. I replaced the solenoids and the TCM module (I broke it) and put it all back together. All in all, pretty easy job.

At last I could drive the car without the hard shifting but I had a whole new set of issues. I am guessing the car kept adjusting itself to compensate for the failing transmission because it didn't seem to know when to shift. Several times it was stuck in a forward gear and would not reset until I shut it off and the cranked it back up.

I have ordered numerous scan tools that promised to reset the transmission but none did until....I found the Holy Grail of scan tools for us poor Genesis owners.

I hooked it up, downloaded the correct files and low and behold, it was all right there in the menu. I was able to actuate each solenoid and each one passed. I then chose reset to factory default and I went for a drive. I couldn't believe it, smooth as butter. Now, I bought the car with the hard shifting which was not smart, so I had never know this car without the shifting issues and this was amazing!

I was also able to release the damned parking brake as well. In fact, I went through and tested every component I could.

Word of advice, if you decide to go this route, buy a new TCM ( the TSB says to anyway ) as you are likely to break the very brittle TCM trying to get it out, I did. Also, be prepared as far more trans fluid is going to suddenly pour out than you expect.

I will try to answer any questions you have that I can answer. Youtube is where I learned most of this so please start there and watch as many videos as need to give you the knowledge and/or confidence to tackle this.

Here are the links to the scan tool, Solenoids and TCM. I am not an Amazon affiliate and will receive no compensation for posting the links. Also, you are own your own and should seek advice from a professional mechanic if you run into problems.

Thanks,

Jeff

Give some links from youtube, where you did investigations for configuration of solenoids. thanks

I had the same issue with shifting hard. Fortunately for me I replaced all solenoids(didn’t want to guess which were bad) did a tranny flush and replaced fuel filter in tranny and haven’t had an issue and I’m at 108k.

Which solenoids did you replace? Part numbers?

Hey Remy blue totally off topic but I can't figure out how to message you.. But I been searching for weeks on getting an exaust setup for 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan 3.8 v6 and I can't seem to find anything worth buying but I saw on a previous thread that you would said you bought the MagnaFlow cat back exhaust for the 4.8 and you said you took it to her shop and it fit right on can you send me the link to that exhaust and how has it been since you got it installed

Hey man, the challenging part is the lack of aftermarket parts they made for the sedan. I bought the exhaust 6 years ago from eBay. Everything has been great since install and still sounds good.

My advice that other sedan owners do is look to buy Magnaflow mufflers or any other brand to weld on and resonators or x-pipes if you choose. Our pipes diameter is 2.5” so anything that fits that an exhaust shop can weld. Hope this helps.

So if I can find a Cat-Back exhaust that is for the coop but is 2.5 in it'll fit my sedan cuz I have tons of exhaust for the coop as long as it's 2.5 in diameter pipe?

I meant the market has tons of exhaust for the coupe not me

I don’t think that works because the exhaust lay out might be different and the sedan is longer. If you are talking just mufflers it should work but not the whole exhaust.
