  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2016 Genesis 3.8. have owned for two years. Twice when going about 5-10 mph once in stop and go traffic and another time in a parking lot the transmission shifted so violently I thought I had been rear ended by the car behind me. Car worked find after that. Did not mention to dealer since it was so infrequent. I had 2008 Azera that would do a similar thing after driving a long time on interstate and it would downshift harshly when on the exit ramp. Has anyone else had this happen with their Genesis?

Quite the timing sir.
I have owned my '16 3.8 2wd just a couple of months, and mine did the same thing yesterday evening, but at around 30 mph. I too thought I had been hit. Crazy sensation.
And when I arrived home a mile later, I adjusted position in the driveway by shifting to reverse, and the trans grabbed unevenly; so went back to drive, same shudder; repeated a few times and it was consistent. But this AM: all back to normal.
Those violent slams cannot be good for the transmission.

I also had the same thing happen a month ago. It was raining and I was going about 35, was switching lanes and I sped up as the car in the other lane was speeding up and I had to get over as my lane was merging. The car wasn’t close enough to hit me but was creeping up to the point where my BSM alarm went off as I was done merging in. The car made a loud thud sound and it felt as if I got rear ended but nothing happened. I pulled into a gas station about half mile ahead just to make sure there was no damage. Really strange, and it has not happened since then.

I am going to dealer this Thursday about a moving seat. I will ask them about the transmission lurching. Will post what they say.

What is your mileage?

My current mileage is 27K. The first instance it was about 18K the second it was about 22K

Has happened to me once or twice. Driving partial throttle...car gets stuck at around 5k RPM and hangs there for a second and then, BAM. Truly felt like I had been hit.

No one will be able to replicate it (of course) I'm going to have dealer scan it to see if there were any faults that computer caught.

Mine does this too, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I'm confident it has to do with random bad timing when you get on/off the gas pedal, and the transmission gets freaked out for whatever reason. It's really neat [/SARCASM].

I have had a similar issue with my 2016 Genesis 3.8. I've had it for 2.5 years and it has 66K miles on it. I experience the jerking and the car not being able to accelerate past 15 mph. I thought it was the transmission and took it to the dealership. turns out they say I need to replace the throttle body because it is bad. cost is $750 and is out of warranty because its past 60K miles. Not happy as I feel I shouldn't have to replace a major part at this mileage especially since I have followed all the recommended manufacturer's maintenance. If you have the problems where it seems like the transmission is jerking or you can't accelerate, get the throttle body checked out. it may need to be cleaned, have the position sensor replaced, or worse is going bad and needs to be repaired or replaced entirely.

I had a similar thing happen this week around 50mph, I went to accelerate to pass and the tranny slipped (engine RPMs when up but car did not move forward appropriately) then there was a really loud bang, which lead to it being engaged fully and taking off. The bang was enough for me to look in the mirror to see if I hit something, or parts were left behind.

Before that I had 2 other experiences in the last 2 weeks of minor slipping, barely noticeable and while driving at highway speeds (to the point where, I was asking myself was that the tranny slipping?)

I have the 2016 3.8 AWD and it wasn't wheel spin or traction control kicking in and there were no CEL or other warning lights afterwards.

Car only has 14,000 miles on it.

I will keep an eye on it to see if any of this happens again, and then have them check what lvpoole7 said (throttle body)

lvpool7 isn't this covered under the drive line warranty for you?
