  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 Genesis with 74,000 miles. Bought from dealer 2015 with 24,000 miles. I have the "technology" package. Really love this car. My first "foreign" car ever!
does anyone know what the fluid capacity of the 8 speed transmissions? My owners maintenance guide states that I should change the trans fluid at 60,000 miles. When I called the dealer to make an appt., they told me its a "sealed" transmission and does not need to be changed until 100,000 miles. Well, I took it in for what they said would be a "flush". To me, that means hooking up the trans lines and pushing new fluid in to replace the the old fluid. How the trans filter gets clean is a mystery to me. When I picked up my car the next day, the work receipt showed that they did a "drain and fill", with only 5 qts of new fluid!!!!! When I asked about it, they stated that that is all that is needed. When I asked about the fluid capacity, nobody knew. When I asked about the new/old fluid issue, they looked at me like I had two heads. ANYWAY - need some help here. What is the capacity of this 8 speed trans? and should I be worried about this service? Does this transmission have a filter (I was told it did not) Hell - for $240, I can do the work myself. Anyone? Please and thanks!

Sounds like you know the difference of a drain and fill versus a flush even if the dealer does not. I don't know the capacity, but more than 5 quarts. I think you may have a legit complaint if they did not do what you asked.

Seems to be a lot of unknowns on how often to change. What does the manual say? Seems like many are 100k or more now. I've owned dozens of cars, most with automatics, but only had one need rebuilding. That is the only one I had a fluid change done too. Coincidence? Maybe.

Your transmission is not really sealed but your dealer did the right thing. All that is ever recommended in most transmissions is a drain and refill, historically true flushes have caused more troubles than cures. Because you cannot drain the torque converter you get a partial fluid change and therefore a 5 qt refill as opposed to the 10 qt capacity. I believe the filter may be built into the pan and if you want to change it you must do the pan as well.
The procedure is relatively simple: Drain, refill until it overflows at operating temperature and plug.

One might hope they would do a few drain and fills to get it all out, but The service they performed is generally considered "good enough" and that's how I've always been taught to do a drain and fill.

You're right about the filter, though. Curious if the manual calls for the filler, or just the d&f

As stated above, The transmission filter is made into the transmission pan. To change the filter, as I had done on mine , a new pan/filter was installed.
