2012 Sedan tech pachage.

When I went home, reversed into the garage. wanted to move a bit forward but the car never went into drive. went back and forth between park and drive but no lock. Was only able to go park, neutral or reverse. Then I tried to switch to "manual" shift. Still showing "neutral" on the dashboard. Now i'm stucked in this position. anybody experienced this issue? I know 2012 are known to have transmission issues but My car was working great until I backed up in the garage. The car have no lights on the dashboard too. :( Happenned to anyone before?

Seems like it could be the shift linkage. Also, you should be able to pry off the tab above the "P" , stick a flathead screwdriver or something similar in there, and shift it with the car off. I would also disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes and see if that resets the computers. Wouldnt hurt.

I've tried with the screwdriver but it didnt do anything because my car is stucked in manual shifting. I think this is only used if you are stucked in park

I have the same issue here with my 2013. It’s been progressively getting worse. Sometime can’t shift out of drive. Sometimes car won’t start because it doesn’t recognize that it is in park. In this case I shift it neutral (if it will let me) and I start it there. From there trying to shift into drive is temperamental. It either goes, won’t go at all, or goes to drive but doesn’t want to stay there....it’s in drive but the dash won’t show that it is...it’s like it’s hovering a line between drive and neutral. Sometimes pulling back hard on the shifter while it is trying to stay in drive makes the drive symbol appear on the dash but when I let go the symbol does away as well. Now it has evolved to struggling to get it in park and having the dash recognize that it is. If you have found out anything, please let me know. The past 10 days I have had to stop driving entirely because this problem has become unmanageable. My did a few basic things that I agreed should have fixed the issue as it seems mechanically based (oiling and greasing the shifter) but now he seems at a loss of what to do. With no car, covid19, and no groceries stores nearby...it’s not a good time have no way to get around. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem with 2013 Genesis sedan (3.8 litre). The problem is the shift cable assembly (part # 46790-3M050) and the shift lever. Shift levers are currently on back order and delivery is expected to take weeks. Alternate option is to buy the shift lever (part number # 459324E000, LEVER-ATA MANUAL CONTROL )from Korea based online supplier. I used www.sparekorea.com and placed my order yesterday (September 19, 2021).

Annnnd I also have the same problem (2013 sedan 3.8)... again.

2019 June, cruise control at 55, car starts coasting, tach to idle. Pull off, shift to park, then to R fine, N fine, spongy to D fail. Shift to P, shut off car, cuss for 30 seconds, restart, and shifts just fine. Three days later, back out of store parking, spongy to drive and will not move. Stranded, slant-bed to H dealer ($80), warranty covered "adjust of shift cable". Two months later, AFTER warranty apparently expired, stranded again, slant-bed to H dealer ($112), $380 to replace "bad shift cable". H would not help.

Now in 2022 April, stranded again, one hour from home, with 8yo grand kid. Can P/R/N all hot afternoon (72), but no Drive. One hour of cool down, and kid tears, started and drove home without a problem???? Backed into garage and now will not shift to drive. My dilemma: take to H dealer ($???), or order shift assy and take to trusted mechanic?

Still the best touring car I have ever owned. Any sage advice?

I have the exact same problem with my 2012. Brought it to a small used vehicle Hyundai shop. They got it back to "working", but could not explain what they did to resolve the issue (red-flag). I drove home and reversed into garage. Went to adjust position by putting in Drive, and no-go. Can shift between Park / Reverse / Neutral, but will not go into Drive. Back to dealership (better dealership this time).

$1,400.00 and five weeks later, still have problems. "All shifter related parts replaced".
1. Attempting to P, but stuck in R. Use key from fob, override switch, works fine.
2. Shift to R, backing up "ratcheting" sound (park cog interference?). Shift to P, then R again works fine.
3. Cold"er" operation fine, but hot weather/road expect problems.
4. Random cruise control failure with EPB error????? Power off, wait 30 secs, works fine.

Does anyone here know whether the shifter is a direct link to the valve body, like older cars? Or if the shifter cable is just connected to a sensor or something? I'm just wondering if you may have a bad transmission control module, or if something that's actually mechanical is the problem. I've never worked on one of these, so I'm just throwing out guesses at this point.

Is there a good independent mechanic shop close by, where you could have it checked out? I would recommend at least getting a second opinion, if you haven't done that already.

I have the fix for this I figured it out. So the problem is most likely that your shifter cable got misaligned. This is under the car mounded driver side on the side of the transmission oil pan. You can see it if you look under it sticks out a bit. I got stuck in manual mode when in neutral and had to think about how to get it out. I determined that going under the car and reaching up to ouch the lever “right” or towards the back of the car, would initiate the switch to go into the drive position. Sure enough I did this and it displayed I was in 1st. I did this with the parking brake on and the car on but not running.

Found another possible temporary fix that i haven't been able to find online, so sorry if it's already out there but i hope it helps anyone because this problem really sucks when it does happen. The first time i thought it was a one time glitch in the shifter assembly and second time i knew right away somethingss up, so ever since then i have stayed away from using manual shift (which is a bummer not to be able to use) in fear of getting it stuck. As a result i carry a long flat head screwdriver in the glove box just in case and here's why...

My problem was just like OP's, I had it in Drive and decided to place it in Manual slot after light turned green, but the display and Tranny stayed in Neutral and shifter shaft was not able to move into Drive slot no matter how hard i wiggled into it, hence neither any other slot above it. The shift release button had no effect either. Turning car on and off, locking and unlocking doors, disconnecting battery, pushing car forward or backwards, revving lol, basically anything practicaly relevant didnt work either. After i pushed car off middle of street, i tried all these things. Then i digged into the shifter assembly after searching online for any clues and I found a fellow Genny owners video on how to remove the shifter/controller console (Linking below). After lifting the knob and cover out of the way and looking into the shift assembly i found that there was a plastic lever that was preventing the Shifter shaft from moving into Drive and higher up, and no matter if car on or off, brakes pressed or unpressed, it wouldnt move on its own. So basically just used a flat head to push that lever out of the way and that was it. Second time around, i used that flat head to pry the consoles partly out the way to do the same, but with a quickness like if traffic was waiting, because they were lol. I'll try to make a vid tutorial soon. Sorry for the long descriptive post but I hope this helped, and also hope there is someone out there that has an actual permanent fix to this or why its getting blocked off by the lever.

Can see send instruction? Have a video? Unfortunately had a boo boo and tap the driver front side. Luckily no damage however it'd after that did my car start jerking. There was also a smell like a liquid was burning. All this only happened after a tap? Would like to cross off list before taking it somewhere and they charging thousands of dollars for a 20 minute fix. Thanks

I know I'm late to the party but...I had this issue and after taking it to a mechanic, was told it was the plastic fitting around the gear shift that was blocking the shifter from moving.

I have a 2012 and had shifter issues and spent a great deal of time trouble shooting and will try to list symptoms and how I resolved.

Issues:
Would not start cause it wasn't in park.
Could not get out of manual mode gear - stuck and had to disassemble the console
Stiff shifting or would not go properly into certain gears suck as park, reverse or driver - it just didn't feel right.
I replaced the inhibitor switch, lube the cable and seemed okay for a year until the shifter seemed off again. I took the bracket off at transmission again and what I finally realized was the bracket for the bracket assembly part#45932B that attaches to the shifter cable and to the transmission has a bushing part#45963 on it that I initially couldn't see cause it was full of rust and debris. This alone was the final culprit of the the vehicle not shifting correctly and putting everything out of alignment. I put the bracket in a vice and rotated the hexagon side with vice grips and used penetrating oil to free up and then cleans as best as I could with wire brush and applied some anti-seize. This alone was not allowing the vehicle to shift properly at certain times in selected gear and also did not allow the linkage to move smoothly from Park to Driver range. The misalingment was also the cause of the vehicle to get stuck in manual mode. I have attached a picture with red arrow of bushing on bracket.

Make sure the shifter cable is not seized. Disconnect from underside and move selector to determine if smooth. I lubed the shit out of it and can feel lubricant in the rubber boot underneath now.

Be extremely careful removing bolts for inhibitor switch as I broke one bolt off and cannot remove the stud. The inhibitor is held by remaining bolt and put a stainless steel washer to add more surface area contact. Do not overtighten and use anti-seize for all parts.

Once I cleaned up the bracket and bushing the shifter feels like a hot knife going through butter now!

If appears there may be two part versions of auto transmission case and some brackets are different.
