  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
Genesis G80
My 2017 G80 3.3L has been giving transmission problems. When accelerating from 35 mph to 40 mph the tranny made a loud, high pitched whinning sound. At 40 MPH it shifted into gear and made a huge, loud bang noise and the car lurched ahead. Genesis replaced the tranny. Since having the new tranny, the same thing has happened twice but at a lesser scale, i.e., not as loud banging noise and less of a lurch ahead. Genesis replaced the throttle body assembly as the probable cause. I'm still having the problem intermittantly. The dealer has no idea what the problem is since all diagnostics confirm that everything is normal.
Please help if you have any suggestions. Also, do you recommend that I use the Lemon Law? I'm sure that the car would qualify.

Good luck, research lemon law in your state if it doesn't get sorted after several trips to the dealer.

BY any chance do you have a performance chip on it?

Thank you for the reply. I have no idea what a performance chip is. Is it standard with the car?
All I know is that the transmission specialist took readings while test driving and submitted them to Genesis which subsequently confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the problem remains intermittantly and with less of a shutter when shifting than it did prior to replacing.
I'm seriously considering invoking the Lemon Law. This is the 3rd Genesis that I've owned and the first one with any issues.

AWD or RWD?

My '17 5.0 RWD G80 has had the following issue twice: the tranny revs 1k RPM higher when changing gears (normally happens from 2nd-3rd/3rd-4th. Dealership can't find anything wrong. I'm also experiencing rough shifting during these times. I plan on taking it to a different dealership at my oil change to complain about the issue. Very frustrating......

Just thinking out loud, wonder if they reflashed the powertrain module(s) might make a difference.

I'm at the top of this thread with the '17 G80. I took a test drive with the transmission specialist and we weren't able to replicate the problem. The dealer surmises that the problem may be from a computer issue. Since it occurs only occasionally, I'll ignore the issue. And probably won't purchase a Genesis in the future.

I think you'll find spotty automatic trans issues with many brands, Go over the the Cadillac owners site and look at the 8spd problems those folks have had on the first gen CT6....OMG
I love the 8spd in the G80

The transmission has been replaced and the problem remains. Of course the dealer isn't able to replicate. Loud bang and car lurches forward. Feels like someone hit me in the rear.
Somebody, please help. Is this a safety issue? I'm not able to use the Lemon Law since I'm leasing the vehicle. What should I do? The dealer is getting frustrated with me and nobody know to resolve the issue.

Check your transfers or the differitials

If its AWD have the dealer check the transfer case. There is a way for the tech to disable the AWD system so it's just RWD and see if the problem persists. My AWD had minor surging under acceleration (no banging though), the more throttle the more intense was the surging. Ended up the transfer case was malfunctioning - both it and its computer were replaced. Problem solved.

It's a RWD. Thanks for your suggestion. Genesis now uses a different transmission. I wonder why.

Hi, I am the owner of a 2017 G80 and I have been having problems to with a hard/harsh shift when going into gear. Now it doesn't happen every day but it's doing it more frequent. The dealer also stated they were unable to duplicate the hard/harsh shift. They actually reset my transmission adapter 5 times. The problem still exists. Apparently there is certainly a issue going on here but they choose not to address it. Read under hard/harsh shift in G80 forum. This is so frustrating

So what you have to begin to check you have to troubleshoot your vehicle from the torque converter to your transmission to your differential to your transfer case you have to go in a sequential process to eliminate but the fault maybe these faults will probably not appear as a fault that you can scan there more mechanical than anything I don't know if the dealership mechanic will do that type of troubleshooting for you but that is more than likely the only way that you're going to be able to isolate the problem. Your torque converter should be locking up to allow you into gear smoothly. Do you have htrac.

I don’t know what htrac 🤷🏽‍♀️ and Genesis sent me to their mechanic and even though they felt the hard/harsh shift the just reset the transmission adapter 5 times and sent me on my way.
