  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First off, please understand that this is not a post about the MPG resetting on refills or the time resetting after a few hours. I think that's been discussed ad nauseam here in previous posts.

I have a 2012 base 3.8L Genesis. In the last couple of weeks, all statistics on my IP computer have reset themselves to zero for no apparent reason. Battery connections are solid and other electronics like my radio stations are still correct.

The first time I noticed was when I had just refueled and I went to reset Trip A to zero myself as I always do, and noticed that it read only about 20 miles instead of the nearly 300 it should have read. Oddly, Trip B which I was using to track mileage on my winter tires (mentally counting 1000s since it rolls over) read the exact same value as Trip A. I reset Trip A and left Trip B alone.

Well, just yesterday I noticed that when I flipped to Trip A from the odometer that the trip miles didn't look right, reading about 6 miles. I flipped to Trip B and it again read the same value as Trip A, even though I haven't touched resetting Trip B. I also noticed that my MPG was way off from what it read the day before and was changing significantly every 10 secs or so like it does after a fillup. I don't park on a slope.

This seems to me that the whole trip computer system is resetting itself, although thankfully (or not :) ) the odometer retains its value.

Curious if anyone else has had this problem before I go and bitch at Hyundai about it ...

Hi Jim,
Just letting you know that my 2009 Genesis sedan V6 3.8L is at the dealers for the third time for the same (or similar) problem you are having.

They have, in the past, installed updates in the computer, checked for errors, etc. but the problem keeps re-occurring.

Am I so far given you hope? :D

They called me today and told me the battery has a bad cell and is only showing a supply of 9 volts as opposed to the minimum 12V, and they think this might be related to the computer auto-resetting itself, but they kept it to check with a new battery.

What I have observed is that intermittently and for no apparent reason (as far as I can tell, I have not been able to replicate the problem intentionally) when I shut off the engine, the chime starts sounding as if something were left on and there's where I know it's done it again.

Both trip odometers would show 0 miles; more often than not I get the Low Tire Pressure light on (and stays on until they reset it at the dealers) and the display will show 1 or 2 tires low, when I start the engine the Trunk Open light goes on for a few seconds even though the trunk is closed.

This last time it did it when I got home at night and when I opened the door no interior light worked, not even manually pressing all the buttons, a few minutes later they came back on by themselves. The next morning on my way to work, I noticed (and this is not the first time) a very strong smell of burned plastic, the smell you get when there's an electrical short.

Let me know if you have any luck with your car as I'll let you know what goes on with mine, maybe we can come up with enough data to help the dealers find the source of this problem.

Hi, I had something very similar on a new 2011 Ford.. All sorts of silly krap happening..
Finally the service manager changed the battery of his own back..
Yippeeeeeeeee - the car was absolutely amazing, faster, everything worked and most of all the Ford Sync...

similar and much worse things happen in bmw land with a failed/failing/bad battery.

hopefully the battery swap out will resolve the problem !

ppp

edit: P.s. first thing in troubleshooting... check power. if it's not the first on the mechanics list... they aren't a good mechanic !

Yes, I did discover that this was a low battery voltage problem.

I was using a dc/ac converter out of the 12V outlet to power my computer for long periods without the engine running. Not a very wise move.

I even discharged the battery to the point where it wouldn't start one time. Finally learned my lesson and got a jump battery to use if I want to do this in the future and power the computer off that instead of the car battery.
