In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi folks,

I'm here to ask for advice dealing with Bank 2 (driverside) misfires which began about two weeks ago, and the car hasn't been driven much since. It idles very badly and I'm afraid to do any damage to the engine. I've instead spent several days reading up on threads here and educating myself using the service manual PDFs. Thanks for making those available, by the way.

I have used an OBDII scanner and software for a short whilte (Car Scanner Pro) but I don't run the engine much, for fear of damage.

Car:
2013 Hyundai Genesis Sedan 5.0 R-Spec 88k miles, last oil change within 5k miles, new H9 battery which appears to be operating normally
Spark plugs haven't yet been replaced but will be inspected shortly

Diagnostic codes:
P0019 -- Camshaft or crankshaft position sensor issues on Bank 2 (driverside)
P0300 -- Multiple cylinder misfires
P0302, P0304, P0306, P0308 -- misfires all throughout Bank 2 (driverside cylinders 2 4 6 8)

Other interesting findings from OBDII scanner:
Fuel trim for Bank 1 oscillates frequently, while Fuel Trim for Bank 2 remains a flat zero
This, to me, seems important! But I imagine this is more the "symptom" than the "cause" -- unless my thinking is backward?

What my research suggests:
1) This could be related to Camshaft Position Sensor or wiring failures?
- Tested wiring harness and got the correct voltages at all 4 CPS connectors
- Have not yet tested the CPS sensors themselves, since I don't have a good Back Probe for my multimeter
- Maybe tonight I'll simply swap the driverside exhaust CPS with the passengerside exhaust CPS, and same with intake CPS sensors, and see if my misfires "move" to the other bank?

2) This could be related to OCV oil control valve?
- There are two of these on each bank, in the front of the heads, and they appear to make adjustments to combustion.
- I removed one last night after GREAT trouble getting it loose from the head. Bolt came out easily enough but the sensor itself took 20 minutes of nonsense and gentle prying and not-so-gentle work with needlenose pliers.
- I am replacing both of these on the driverside because they appear, from my searches, to be a common trouble item.

3) This could be related to Bank 2's O2 sensors or catalytic converter?
- However, I am not getting any trouble codes from O2 sensors.

Asking for help:
If anyone has any guidance, comments, etc -- I'd be real happy to hear about it. I do my best to self-educate, but there's a lot at play here and I'm still fairly new to DIY work on the Genesis. It's certainly not as straightforward as my 95 Impala SS!

Thanks folks.

Hey man having similar issue. Bank 2 cylinders are misfiring on my 4.6 as well.

What ended up being the first for you?

Update:

Here's what I did, and here's how it played out. For now, I'm going to consider this one a "lucky win".

1) Swapped the camshaft position sensors from driver and passenger (rear engine upper corners) -- also cleaned off a tiny amount of sludge from each sensor. I reckon it could have been an accumulation of fine metal dust, as they're magnetic sensors.
2) Removed, cleaned, and reinstalled one of the Oil Control Valves from the driverside. It wasn't particularly dirty or anything. I doubt this did anything?
3) Cleared codes from the computer using my OBDII scanner

Somewhere in those three things, the misfire has stopped. It was constant until I did these things, and then it was immediately gone. I did all three things at once because I was tired and frustrated and angry, so I can't say which did what. I didn't get a new tank of gas, I didn't run it on a day with significantly different weather, nothing like that.

Take from that what you will. I bought some new OCV (oil control valve) to install just in case that was the issue, since people often say they cause misfires on these engines.

I'll come back to this thread if (more like WHEN) this problem shows back up!

I know this is an old thread, but I have had the same thing happen. 2015 Genesis 3.8L 120k miles. The only OBD codes were P0300 P0302 P0304 P0306. I been working out of town and didn't want to spend my time fixing the vehicle, so I took it to a shop. Car is running really rough idle, no power, and burping thru the intake. The mechanic couldn't figure it out, after removing spark plugs testing coils, sent injectors out to be flow tested and cleaned. The mechanic sent it to the dealership. Dealer says I need a new engine. The mechanic thinks its a timing issue, not a new engine issue.

So, I towed it home and got to working. I replaced the spark plugs, coils, and the VVT oil solenoid on bank 2, also the camshaft position sensors. That didn't fix it. I figured I have nothing to lose at this point, and dropped the exhaust pipe at the primary catalytic converter. It looked fine, but why wouldn't it. I could not get to the primary O2 sensor to remove and let it run to see if the cat was plugged. So after hours of agonizing, I went ahead and reamed that bad boy out. Well, guess what? that sucker was plugged. After I cleaned it out all the problems went away. I cleared the check engine and other codes, and drove it. All is well again.

This vehicle has 4 catalytic converters on it, Bank 1 primary and secondary, and bank 2 primary and secondary. I'm going to drive it this way for a while, and see how it goes.

that sucker was plugged
Hi mate,

I read your comment. I have exactly same problem . You wrote " that sucker was plugged" Can you please explain what is sucker? I have been fought with this problem for a long time.
Thank you

Yes @Lug-nuts, would you be able to explain more what "that sucker was plugged" means. What exactly was plugged and how did you clean it out? Thanks! Also, how easy/hard is it to get to the VVT solenoid on bank 2. Could you explain it in super layman's terms to a dummy like me?

Hi @RedBeardCPA, can you explain in detail how you got to the Oil Control Valves on the driver side and how you cleaned them? Do I need to remove a bunch of stuff to get at the OCV's? If I have to remove stuff to get to them, are there gaskets that I need to replace to put it back together. Any help you could provide to a simpleton like me would be GREATLY appreciated!
