  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Thanks to the help of this forum and its members, TrueDelta received enough reliability data on the Hyundai Genesis to provide a repair rate for the car, and officially released a result today.

The reported repair rate of 43 successful repair trips per 100 cars per year is average, and not far off "better than average." It's also very close to the repair rates reported for the 2008 BMW 5-Series, 2008 Infiniti G35, and 2008/2009 Pontiac G8.

All of the problems reported through the end of 2008 were minor electrical, which is the most common sort of problem for a car in its first year of ownership.

Given that the Genesis is an all-new car, and is much more complex than the average Hyundai, this repair rate is much lower (better) than it could have been.

A big thanks to everyone who helped out. This is the first reliability information on the Genesis, and you made it possible.

We'll have updated results for the car in May, August, and November. Additional participants would enable more accurate and more detailed information in these future updates.

Will TrueDelta report a full year for the 2009 in may?

No. Not many cars were signed up early enough. The current results are based on about 2.4 months of data per car. In three months, that average will probably increase to about 4 months, since we'll have some new participants and the survey only collects data going forward. The reported repair rates are always extrapolated to yield an annual repair rate.

There are two reasons the repair rate might change with future updates:

1. After initial glitches, these cars don't have any other problems. In this scenario, the problem rate will decrease. This is most likely to happen when the repair rate is much higher than with the Genesis.

2. Hyundai reduced initial repair rates with unusually thorough inspections. In this scenario, the problem rate will increase. This is most likely to happen when the repair rate is lower than with the Genesis. There is, of course, always the possibility of a single very common failure at a future point in time, but there's absolutely no evidence of this yet.

In other words, past experience with other models suggests that the repair rate is not likely to change much in future updates. Additional evidence: if you look at the results for all Hyundai models, most are similar to this one.
