  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When I approach the trunk it will beep 4 times, unlatch and then only open about 2 inches, about 50% of the time. When I bring it to the mechanic it seems to work and he says he can't fix it until he sees it fail. Anyone else have this problem? And if so, what was done to fix it. Thanks

I think most of us have the same problem. If there is any added weight on the trunklid such as rain or even leaves, the lid will not raise on its own. I talked to my mechanic about this and there is no documented cure, but he was going to check with Hyundai to see if there was any adjustment in the spring tension that might help.

Does the trunk lid act the same on an incline as it does on level surface? If it does then demo the problem on a hill.

i have the same "issue" on 15 tech and from what i've gathered on this forum its supposed to unlatch only for non-ultimate.

Same thing here...whatever spring they have to open it is just a tad too whimpy. Since there does not seem to be any hydraulics in the hinge I fear that too powerful of a spring would let it fly open. Guess it's just a bad balance...

I've had cars that would just unlock when you hit the fob, others that opened completely. Both have advantages and disadvantages. In heavy rain you may not want it completely open. Or you may want to just reach in for the snow brush and then close it until you get it cleaned off.

so i went to the dealer to get the drive shaft replaced for the fluttering noise and brought this up with the service adviser. he was initially skeptical it was supposed to fully open upon release and we tested on a 2017 and it went up automatically for a non motorized trunk. they ended up ordering a coil spring and two struts and got those replaced. trunk now raises up fully once its released. i had to also emphasize to him that this is an advertised feature and even had a video ready incase they said otherwise.

My trunk opens fully when I press the fob or interior button but I turned off the Smart Trunk feature as too many times the trunk opened when I did not want it to. Granted, I was standing at the rear of my vehicle but I had no need to open the trunk. Example: finish a meal with friends at a restaurant and many times we stand next to the rear of our cars chit chatting before leaving and up pops the trunk. I think waving a foot is a better idea to open the trunk.

Just unlock the car first and it won’t open automatically. Waving the foot is clumsy for me and requires doing a bit of a dance if I am holding something with both hands.

I'm so used to never taking the fob out of my pocket, I would never get used to having to do that under certain circumstances. Once accustomed to the kick under the bumper (even with hands full), you would become a natural !!

Evidently you've not had knee surgery and don't have arthritis. I don't dance on one foot.

Eh, neither is a good solution, I'm waiting till they come up a voice command type thing like Alexa, so you can say "Hey Genny", open the trunk lol.

Not really far fetched. At least half the job is done, just need an outside microphone to hear you.

An outdoor environment is a lot more noisy around car with other cars, wind, people walking by, etc. all around. It works pretty well for a cellular phone because you are close to the mic. Not so easy just putting a mic somewhere on the car unless you want to shout or bend down over the car.

I like the way the trunk opens. I have had it warn me or open once or twice when I did not want it to open in 3 years, no big deal.

I'm finding this 'smart trunk' feature (with the trunk opening fully and not merely popping open an inch or two) on my 2G Gen is often hit-or-miss.
Me thinks a trip to the dealership is in order to remedy the situation.
I had both hood & trunk struts go out early on my Volvo S90T6 and regrettably were not under warranty ($$$).

My smart trunk has been good, goes all he way up each time even when the lid had 2 inches of snow on it.

With the Ultimate you have the power trunk. I think the problems discussed here are with the non-power spring loaded trunk that the other models have.

I have a 2018 G80 Ultimate and the trunk lid apepars to be motorized. You hear a buzzing sound as it goes up. A few times I inadvertently grabbed the trunk lid and it pulled out of my heand as it went up. Something more than a flimsy spring going on there.

I think I got the jist of that. My 2012 just popped open a few inches never went all the way up.
