  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Trunk lid opening

Regarding Smart Trunks opening fully:

"...the class action lawsuit filed by a Pennsylvania resident alleges that Hyundai has sold and leased countless vehicles, including the plaintiff’s 2015 Hyundai Sonata, equipped with defective Smart Trunks that never open more than a crack. Instead of automatically opening as advertised, the plaintiff alleges that they simply unlatch, requiring consumers to manually push open the trunk lid, thereby failing to provide the “hands-free” convenience the Smart Trunk is advertised to deliver."

The class action asserts that the Smart Trunk comes as a standard feature on the “2015 Sonata (Sport, Limited, and Sport 2.0T);1 2015 Azera (all trims); 2015 Genesis (all trims); 2016 Sonata (Limited, Sport 2.0T, and Limited 2.0T); 2016 Azera (all trims); 2016 Genesis (all trims); 2017 Elantra (Eco and Limited); and the 2017 Sonata (Limited and Limited 2.0T).” In addition, the Smart Trunk was an extra option costing between $950 and $1,900 on the Hyundai 2015 Sonata (Eco), 2016 Sonata (Sport), 2017 Sonata (Sport), and the 2017 Elantra (SE).

"The Hyundai class action suit, brought by the plaintiff on behalf of himself and all other purchasers and lessees of Hyundai vehicles equipped with Smart Trunks, charges the car company with breaching its express and implied warranty obligations because it allegedly failed to deliver conforming, non-defective Smart Trunks to consumers despite, in many cases, multiple repair attempts. In addition to breaching its express and implied warranties, Hyundai is alleged to have made misrepresentations and knowingly failed to disclose material facts about the Smart Trunks to consumers in violation of the California Unfair Competition Law, the California False Advertising Law, the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, and as a result was unjustly enriched by its conduct."

wow i would have never thought.... interesting to keep track of this one to see what happens but look like it will take a long time...its already been over a year and all they've been doing is motions going back and forth....

mine works better after dealer replaced struts and spring but doesn't work 100% of the time.

I noticed a fault in my trunk opening on its on own in my garage.....I isolated the root cause to having my key fob in my pocket when washing dishes and having it banging it up against the counter. The only logical preventative measure I found was to get the wife to do the dishes;)

The dealers could not replicate this one either so were reluctant to attempt any repairs.

lawsuit has been settled but only includes the sonata . after having the struts and springs replaced under warranty it worked properly for a few months but trunk is now back to raising not even an inch when released. anyone have an actual working solution? adding a spring was mentioned but unclear if that works for the genesis.

Unless they change materials the same problem will keep coming back once the part see wear again. Additional spring may help. Perhaps there will be a service bulletin and a fix so they can avoid another lawsuit.

I like the way the trunk opens. I have had it warn me or open once or twice when I did not want it to open in 3 years, no big deal.
Sometimes you come out side and it's open with out your knowledge.

How did that happen?
Had it happen with the fob in my pocket. Stoop down and it can put pressure on the button. At home or work I'd always take the fob out of my pocket.

Replace one existing strut with one with higher force, the existing B1000 struts are rated 22lbs, the B1010/B1011 for the motorized trunk are rated 80+ lbs, in my opinion this is too much, I tried it and the trunk flies open and it's a lot harder to close. I have ordered an aftermarket strut rated for 45lbs. I'll keep you updated on how that works.

The aftermarket part I installed is Strongarm 6926 (got it from rock auto for less than $10) and the trunk opens beautifully. Not as violent as the B1010 struts and much easier to close the trunk. One thing I noticed is that the aftermarket part had a thinner rod compared to the existing B1000 strut, but I dont think that will be an issue since the B1000 struts are rated 22lbs and the Strongarm is rated 45lbs. Worst case I can always install the original strut

Get this strut part# 81771-B1011 from any Hyundai dealership. You will only need one and it's totally inter changeable driver/passenger side doesn't matter. Only takes about 30 min tops to replace. Once you are done trunk will open up fully.

I tried that part and yes the trunk does open, but it opens so violently. You wouldn't want to be over the trunk lid when it open. Plus it is a lot more difficult to close. That's because the 81771-B1011 is rated at 80+ lbs. The part I mentioned is rated at about half that force and it still opens the trunk and you only need to replace one, just like 81771-B1011.
