  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Trunk Lid Self Opening

I'm wanting to replace the failed hydraulic - If I have to reach to push the trunk lid up I could easily have just pressed the unlock on the trunk usually quicker.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
...I ordered part 81771-B1010 while the car already part 81771-B1000 installed...

Can you post a link to the part you purchased? It’s a nice fix to a problem I didn’t know I had.

So trying to lock down the steps to this:
  • Loosen trunk seal above where the "bag hook" hangs down.
  • Remove Bag Hook.
  • Slide prybar between top liner and inside trunk roof metal to pop out clips - hopefully not breaking them.
  • Pull trunk roof liner down (and out?)
  • Pull down left or right side of the side liner (which one?) and replace the strut - can replace one or both. - Reverse

So if I had to do it again....
  • Get in trunk and while upside down pull the liner down closest to the rear seat to pop the 2 clips back there. If you start from the rear of the car the liner will get at an angle and can snap the clip holders.
  • Remove Bag Hook.
  • Pull up trunk seal weatherstrip exposing 3 metal J tabs holding liner to body. Push liner slightly up and pull the tabs back to release them from the body.
  • Gently pull liner down and use hands to get as close to clips as possible and pull then down square. No need for any pry bars...
  • Think there are 5 clips in total. 2 in front, 2 in rear, and 1 in the middle on the left. Liner will just fall down once everything is popped loose.
  • Pull either side liner just enough to reach strut...looking at them I can't say either is more important than the other. I only replaced the left side and trunk opens like it's on fire. The struts are removed by inserting a small screwdriver under the C clip and pulling it off. The new one will just pop on the standoffs...no need to mess with the clips.
  • To put it back together I would hang the liner by the 3 J clips and then start pushing the plastic clips back in. Replace bag holder and weatherstrip.

My trunk unlocks when I stand behind it, but it doesn't open which defeats the whole purpose. And now the inside button just unlatches it without rising up either. I've taken my 2018 Genesis into the dealer twice before to have them check it out and they 'found nothing wrong'. This time, they've had my car for 4 weeks as they are trying to fix the problem!!! At least the loaner is newer and a G90 instead of my G80. Funny (or not), the newer, more expensive car's trunk is worse! The latch doesn't disengage so I have to pull the key out of my purse to click the trunk and then it will unlock. Ugh.

I installed a new strut in mine yesterday, I only replaced one (DS) just as @celltech did. Works as it should now, opens up with plenty of strength. If I replaced both struts I probably wouldn't be able to close the trunk LOL.
So nice to be able to walk up to the car with my hands full and be able to place things directly into the trunk.

Thanks again for all the info!

So not what I expected but it all worked out. Turns out my trunk already had 2 struts in there, even though the parts diagrams say it's for the power lift system. I ordered part 81771-B1010 while the car already part 81771-B1000 installed. I can't figure out what the difference is supposed to be. The old struts had no pressure and can be collapsed by hand while the new one is stiff as hell. Perhaps the old ones are just dampers and not for lift assist, as they do act more like a traditional shock absorber. They don't appear to be blown out as there is no oil leakage.

At any rate I pulled the left side off and replaced it with my ebay special. Bingo, the trunk opens like it's ready to consume my golf clubs. I actually would not want to be hovering over it when it cuts loose. But it does not open with a crash as the shock action slows it down right at the very end. I really don't think I need to replace the other one as it opens very strong right now.

All you need to pull off is the trunk liner on the top, then you can just fold over the side flaps to access the strut. I ended up breaking some of the plastic clip holders and had to hot glue them back together. Be sure to pull the weatherstrip gasket up and slide off the 3 metal clips first before attempting to pull the panel down. And don't forget to remove the 2 10mm bolts holding the shopping bag hook in place.

Help please, you or anyone else has a moment, please walk me through this. I have had the replacement struts but have no idea how to put them in as I can't even see where they are underneath all the trim. Searched the internet and you tube and can't find a step by step.

.. from your pictures it looks like (fill in blanks please)

1. Remove trim from trunk lid (not sure how to do that -- I have some plastic trim removal tools I bought on Amazon).
2. Remove side trim (including the shopping hook.
3. pull off old strut (not sure how)
4. replace with new strut.

Thanks for your help... This is a real pain.

Sorry for the crummy pic...it's overcast and the sun is not lighting up the dark trunk. There are 3 main "panels" in the trunk...the only one you need to remove is the top one. The 3 clips holding onto it on the rear are under the weatherstriping. You will also have to remove the 2x10mm bolts holding the bag hook. If you get up in there and look at the top cover you will see 5 areas with metal rivets. This is where there the push in connectors hold the panel to the car body. I don't think you can really use your panel tool to pop them...I would just get my hand close to it and gently pull them out.

Once the top cover is removed you can just bend down the side panels to expose the struts. On the ends of the struts are metal "C" clips. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to pop them out. When putting the new strut on simply press the ends on...the clip will expand to cover the mounting bosses.

I have both trunk interior side panels off presently for a separate project I’m working on if anyone needs a picture of the struts or workings under the panels let me know.

So has anyone had this repaired under warranty? I'm CPO with this problem... Probably not really worth the gas money to drive to dealer, give up the car a week and drive home and back and home again for a $20 strut... but I'm curious if anyone's tried and what the result was? Or is it "normal wear" and not part of it?

I'm also about to change my turn signal bulbs for the 6th time in 2 years.. that's so frustrating but it only takes me 10 minutes if that. Ughhhh 1st world problems lol

I didn't even know there were struts in there until I took it apart. I assumed it was only springs. I tried to get my dealer to fix it and they said only the Ultimate (with its electric trunk system) was supposed to open on its own. Knowing what I know now I would push them to fix it, but maybe save it until you have a more important issue.

I used to work for a Hyundai/Chrysler dealer. (Used to blow me away to see a Genesis next to a Caravan in the showroom).... but I didn't leave on the best terms.. not sure if they'd help me or screw me if I went in for warranty claims

wow, thank you thank you. This is amazingly helpful! I will post once complete!

I bought a set of used struts from a powered trunk Genesis to make my non powered trunk open once unlocked. Worked like a charm.

I ended up using only one like one of the guys above. Anyone want the other one? I’ll let it go for $15 plus shipping. I paid $35 for both so I think it’s fair.

Gennadiy what year is your car? I have this "heavy lid" problem. My cars are 2011 and 2014. Is your extra strut still available?

Mine is 2015. Not sure if it fits the previous generation. I still have it if you want to give it a shot.
