  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have and LOVE my 2018 G80 3.3T. It has been virtually trouble free for almost 70k miles.

Without warning, the red light indicating the trunk is not properly latched shows up in the center of my dash panel. I may flicker here and there, but for the most part, it is always on.

I am positive the trunk is properly closed because I can hear it latch and the display does not immediately show an unlatched trunk, although eventually it will (within 15-30 seconds.)

The little red trunk lid still blinks even when the car is off.

I was thinking it is a sensor, but have no idea where those might be. I found three little black dots on the trunk lip that seemed like they might be sensors because they seemed to click when I pressed on them. I put tape on each of them and that did nothing.

Any idea where the sensor(s) indicating the trunk is fully closed might be?

Thank you for any help you can offer!!

I see that no one may have answered I am having the same issue and curious is it the actuator latch that is defective?

I have a similar issue. I see that the power trunk stuff was replaced prior to my buying it, I'm not sure what the issue was then.
I was getting the trunk ajar message a lot, and sometimes the trunk would refuse to open or close (manual assistance was required). I looked it over closely, and found that the trunk wasn't quite even when closed. I adjusted one of two bumpers on the trunk lid in to even it out. Since then, I haven't had any cases of it not opening or closing, and it always shows closed when it closes. However, trunk ajar does flash up briefly when I hit a bump sometimes.
I checked the service manual, and as near as I can tell, the trunk ajar switch is in the trunk latch assembly on the trunk lid. So far, I have resisted that thought to take it apart and see if I could make it better.
I also found the recalibrate procedure for the trunk in the service manual. I will probably try that before I do anything more drastic. It is below.

(1) Press the trunk inner switch
(2) Press the trunk outside hand switches at the same time
(3) When pressing 3 seconds of more, a buzzer sound is issued one time.
(4) Close the trunk manually
(5) When using the outside hand switch to open the trunk, the initialization is completed with a buzzer sound.

I think the ajar switch is somewhere in item A.

I am grateful for all the collective knowledge in this group and hope the work around I found will help some until a permanent solution is found.

I played around with it a bit and found the light/sensor goes off when I manually fully engage the latch hook in the trunk lid, SOOOO… I placed tape around the top of the metal catch.

The first time I tried, it worked intermittently. At speeds in excess of 80 mph, the downforce kept the trunk closed and the light would go off. I added more tape, several wraps at a time until now, the trunk closes and opens as it should and no more light on the dash!!!

A side note, the car did NOT want to lock with the trunk light on. This was a real PITA for a bit. I had to lean on the trunk and click lock on the fob to get it to lock.

A little more info on it for the curious...

Description
Power Trunk Lid (PTL) System : The system automatically opens and closes a vehicle’s trunk lid and has the lid stop in a specific position using the interior switches (crash pad switch, pushbutton switch inside the trunk, trunk lid outside handle) and remote control device. Power trunk Module (PTM) transmits/receives vehicle information via CAN communication with ECUs with the aim of determining the trunk position (open or close) and performing self diagnosis.
Trunk Position And Direction
The PTL System will measure the Trunk Position via an integrated hall sensor inside the drive unit motor. The moving direction of trunk lid will be detected by analyzing the current direction of the motor. The hall sensor counting (position detection) is active during power operation mode and during manual mode.
Drive motor power control
The drive motor power will be controlled by using a PWM (power motor) with a frequency of 20 kHz. Depending on the expected and the actual trunk lid speed, the ECU will adjust the power motor to achieve the requested opening and closing speed.
Trunk speed control
For controlling the trunk lid speed overcoming aging, temperature effects and vehicle inclination a regulation is included. The regulation is comparing the actual motor speed with the requested motor speed. Depending on the comparison result, the speed will be adjusted, by increasing or decreasing the power to the motor.
System Components
1. Power trunk lid (PTL) drive unit (A).
1642542805366.png
It is installed inside the left trunk trim of the car and opens and closes the trunk connected to the push rod through the gear motor. It is composed of ECU and drive unit. The drive unit is composed of drive bracket, gear motor, push rod and drive arm.
2. Power latch assembly (A)
1642542815399.png
It delivers the signals on the trunk lid opening/closing to the power trunk module drive unit.
It is composed of power latch and cinching actuator.
3. Cinching actuator (A)

With a built-in motor, the power latch is pulled by unit control of the power trunk module to execute the Step 1/2 locking.
4. Cinching actuator (A)

If trunk open warning goes on then off then back on again, what has to happen to have it stop when driving when I know the trunk is closed?

Try the procedure I indicated in post #3...

Another Solution:

My 2018 G8 has been doing the same thing for three years. I tried tape on the latch ring, and using a small piece of plastic held in place by tape. I also tried to reset as described above. These measures only provided temporary results. After examining the latch ring (the stationary piece above the bumper), I could see it was very slightly twisted to the left. Probably from using to open sudsy beverages when tailgating. I actually had to stand back a few feet to see it. I could see the bolts that held the latch ring, but they are covered by the back trunk body panel.

Tools:
10mm socket
T40 Torx bit
Push pin removal tool or screwdriver

Steps:
1. Remove entire trunk floor panel by lifting on the handle, pull all the way out and set aside.
2. This will expose bolts at corners of the plastic rear trunk panel on the floor of the trunk (2)
3. Pop out push pins on panel (2)
4. Do not remove bolts for cargo hooks - it is unnecessary.
5. Lift out the plastic panel - you’ll hear it snap. This will expose latch ring bolts.
6. Use a T40 Torx bit to loosen latch ring bolts
7. Push the trunk latch ring all the way to the left and forward on the right side. The ring base has arrows stamped into it to provide guidance.
8. Tighten and then step back to examine and see if it is straight.
9. Put everything back together.

It was a simple job, only took about 10 minutes. No more trunk light!

This issue just happened to me too and drained the car battery with the continuous trunk open warning light cycling. The trunk latch mechanism had broken and my solution (in consideration of non-refundable diagnostic fee) was to have the dealership replace it). In retrospect, I could probably have ordered the latch assembly from hyundaipartsdeal.com and done it myself, but the dealership did give me a significant parts discount
