If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Trying to decide 3.8 0r 4.6?

You just spent a lot of money on a car:p. The tiny fuel MPG difference and small cost for the V8 are minimal.

You are right, but as I mentioned above the MPG difference AND the lower cost of Regular Gas for the V6 do make a significant difference.

For me, I would have to say the biggest difference in the 6 or the 8 is the smooth transmission. With the V6, if I accelerate in any higher gear, the RPMs jump up to 2.5-2.7k - The V8 is incredibly smooth with the acceleration. The ZF is amazing.

I agree. The V8 plus the ZF is smooth as butter when accelerating in normal traffic conditions.

The V8 takes regular octane gasoline no problem. There is a slight loss in HP in this case (~5-10 I believe), and some claim a tiny reduction in MPG (which is difficult to verify), but all in all, 87 octane has yet to cause trouble for us "thrifty" V8ers -- that I'm aware of, at least.

The difference in fuel mileage between the V6 and V8 (most notably with in town driving) is certainly significant for some, that is true.

I think it's a matter of preference. For me, the Tau engine and the ZF tranny were the deciding factors. The sheer power of Tau engine amazes me everytime. Thank you Hyhoondai for spending 240 some million dollars and 48 months to come up with the Tau engine.

Forgot one.

Ward's Automobile chose the Tau 4.6 V-8 again in 2010 as one of the 10 best engines in the world.

http://wardsauto.com/reports/2010/tenbest/hyundai/index.html

Seems like most of the newer engines make that list. :D
The Tau was selected probably because of its power AND fuel economy.
It truly is impressive that Hyundai was able to develop such an engine that has comparable power and good fuel economy. Especially on a 4000lbs+ car.

I have to say something in defense of the V6. The power id great, the transmission is smooth, the milage is good and the space under the hood id extra. So that's why i chose the V6 not that the V8 is bad mind you. The real reason is is did not like the wheels on the V8 as much as the V6.

Me neither. I like the V6 wheels MUCH better than the V8 ones. :(
Hyundai could've done a better job with the wheel design of the V8.
FYI, the 18" V6 wheels we get here is top-of-the-line wheels in Korea.

I like the look of the V6 18" wheels but am nervous about how well the chrome covered plastic spoke inserts will hold up. I recall reading posts from people who have had some of them break off. I might even look into getting spares...if they aren't too expensive.

Really? Didn't know there were some owners experiencing that problem.
However, I wouldn't be too worried about the durability.
I have yet to see a single Genny with a broken insert in Korea, and there are a LOT more Gen sedans. :)

I wonder if it could be a warranty item.

Before seeing the Genesis V8 in person, I really liked the V6 wheels, but after seeing the V8 wheels and getting used to them I fell in love with the simpler/sportier look vs. the more luxury look such as on the V6.

Plus I really didn't like the plastic inserts on the V6 wheels, they look super cheap and something that shouldn't be on a luxury car, so once seeing the V6 wheels up close, I was not keeping those wheels, if I was to buy the V6. Bought the V8, and no "additives" to the wheels.

BTW, the V6 wheels on the Genesis remined me of wheels on a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM, but not by wheel style. The Grand AM's chrome wheels were not even chrome, they just had a plastic cover on the wheel that was chrome. I sense the "cheap feeling" in the V6 wheels. I hope everyone, keeps buying the V6 Genesis. Each V6 sold my car gets more abundant, and of out of the 5 other Genesis sedans I have seen since I bought mine, none have been a V8.:)

I would go with the V6 with a tech package. The package offers a lot of worthwhile features, the GPS, Satellite radio and the rear camera. It real depends on if you want the tech features (V6) or the horsepower (V8).

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
My thought process was that comparing a Genesis to a Maxima, Avalon etc the V6 might be your choice. If you are looking at Lexus GS, BMW 5 series etc it is the V8 loaded or nothing. I went with the loaded V8.

Congratulations! I did the same and still love it 5 months and 8k miles later

I am in the same boat. Trying to decide between the 6 and 8 - The price is not a big enough difference in either case.

I did read a thread on this forum where some folks were saying that the V6 may ride smoother than the V8. Different Suspension ???

I drove both and decided on the 3.8 - to me, the ride and handling were more nimble than the 4.6. The 3.8 is also a little more economical. That said, there are lots of good arguments in favor of the 4.6. It's just a matter of preference - I don't think you'll be unhappy with either choice.

I just like knowing my car is faster than most on the highway.... Just a personal thing.

That was speculation. AFAIK the suspensions are the basically the same (maybe slightly bigger torsion bar in front for V8 due to extra 200 lbs). There were just as many complaints about the 2009 V6 as with the 2009 V8. The V6 is a little more nimble due to less weight, if that is a factor.

The V6 gets about 2 MPG better gas mileage on the highway. That may not sound like much, but if everyone in the US drove the a car that got 2 MPG better mileage, it would affect global oil prices, shift power away from OPEC, and would save US lives. One can rationalize that one person cannot make a difference, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If it's a toss-up, then this might be the deciding factor for you (it was for me).

I have the 3.8 since last Summer and am happy with the performance. My last car was a Impala SS with the V8. The Genny might be slightly slower but from a standstill it doesn't have the torque steer the chevy had. It has more than enough power to pass and ramp speed to get on the freeway.

Actually, I am not going to buy a Genesis until the 2011 models come out. I would really like a Front Wheel or All Wheel Drive model. Has anyone heard if Genesis may have a FWD or AWD model in 2011?

That would be more important for me than the choice of a V6 or V8?
