Recently my 2011 Hyundai genesis 3.8l v6 sedan has had some infotainment issues. It started doing a thing where it restarts the entire screen startup boot. It does this every 1-2 minutes with frequency.
After trying to research and get answers I found some tips that in the short term helped but now it does the same thing. 1. Disconnect the battery overnight. 2. Pull the 2 aud fuses and 1 dis fuse and leave it overnight. This did help but it still had the same issue after about a month and a half.
After looking for direct replacement I found Hyundai doesn’t make the head unit anymore.
It seems some stereo installers and speaker shops do have there own head unit repair but be careful who you give it too. A good replacement is 300-800$ just depending where you buy it.
I’ve actually found something very interesting. I’ve been wanting to pull the entire head unit out and totally disconnect it and take it to a reputable repair man and so I did.
To remove the head unit 1. Chock your wheels or parking brake it or both. 2. Put the car in the drive. 3. Get a flatheads or dashboard removing tool and pry on the top corners of the bezel. 4. Disconnect your key fob reader and pull the bezel out entirely. 5. Take the 4 screws and the 2 nuts and remove it.
I have noticed on long range highway driving the engine bay gets really hot. So hot that my glasses fogged when o stick my head under the hood one day. This is interesting, behind the head unit is literally the firewall to the engine. Also it’s really easy for papers and receipts to fall back behind there.
Okay this is where it gets even more interesting. After removing the bezel and allowing airflow I stuck my hand under the head unit for my hand to literally get near to the point of heat blisters.
Clearly the head units fan is not working and the unit is 10000000000% overheating and glitching out which makes sense.
Cooling fan is what I am suspecting to be the issue because when I removed the bezel it worked beautifully with no problems. Just needed airflow.
Below is a picture of the previous owners shopping list which I found sitting on top of the upper face vents. Just above where the blendor boxes sit. This is also why I complained of not getting airflow out of the upper vents.
Also the second pic is the firewall which is directly behind the head unit
