  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Um... anyone else getting clatter at startup?

I have a V6 w/tech package. I've noticed that when I start my car, I'm getting a clattering sound that lasts for only a few seconds - most notably in the morning (first start of the day). I checked the oil, and it's full and clear. It sounds alot like valve clatter, but I suppose it could be the timing chain. Should I be concerned? I was planning to hold off on bringing it to the dealer until it's time for the car's first oil change but can make the time to take it in sooner if this is a real problem.

If you have the ability to .... record the sound... from your cell phone... a mini tape recorder, etc... and post the attachment here. I'm curious.

I've got a digital camera that can record videos and does very well in picking up sound, but I'm not sure how I'd get that video file onto this forum. I'll record my car's startup tomorrow morning and try to get the file posted. I might need to upload it to my Picasa web page and post a link.

Here's a mini-update of sorts. I spoke to the service dept at the dealership I bought from, and they asked how many miles I have on it (about 500). The tech said that this clattering has been reported on a few Genesis' and should "go away" soon. The tech didn't seem to feel the car needs to be looked at until its brought in for its first oil change around 3,500 miles. Thoughts? Opinions?

P.S. I'll post the audio file of the car starting up tomorrow. I may even email it to the service department's manager...

I was asking for the audio file, because mine makes a clacking sound (of sorts) when I turn it on. It has done this since the beginning. I've never thought anything of it... I'm pretty in tune with strange car noises ( you have NO idea the hell I went thru with my previous car, a MINI cooper, lol )... and this sounds like something that is relatively normal, or an expansion sound.

But I would like to hear your audio clip.

OK I talked to the service manager, and my car had the ECM update before it was sold to me. And mine makes this clicking/clacking noise (which I believe is similar to the one the OP is mentioning). I think it's normal. It goes away after a few minutes on mine. I've never thought anything of it.

I have noticed it. But it's not something that caught my ear in a malicious manner.

Just to clarify, this rather loud clattering lasts only a few seconds (four at the most) after the engine is started cold. It's definitely not anything within the passenger compartment, nor does it happen when the engine is started warm. I'm guessing that the oil is draining out of the block at night and that the engine isn't getting any lubrication at all for a few seconds. Not a comforting thought.

I wonder if trying to start the car without having one's foot on the brake pedal would get the oil pump going for a few seconds before actually cranking. Any of you "motorheads" out there know if this is something enjoyingsilence and I need to fret over?

the car doesn't start without the foot on the brake pedal... at least the engine doesn't " turn over ", without foot on brake pedal

I know it won't crank without the brake pedal pushed; I was thinking that maybe you could fool the system into priming the oil pump that way without actually cranking the engine. I'll try it later just to satisfy my curiosity. Anyway, I did a little research and the consensus (for other makes/models) seems to be that if it's only happening for a few seconds then it's nothing to get concerned about. The oil pump just needs a few seconds to get up to pressure. Some people use a thinner viscosity oil to eliminate the delay (thinner pumps faster).

At the first change (whenever you decide), switch to 5W40 synthetic oil and any "dry startup" sounds will greatly diminish, or cease totally! :)

It sounds like what I've experienced on several of my other cars- hydraulic lifter bleed down. Modern engines have hydraulic mechanisms that take up the slack in the valve lash so that there is no clearance and thus no clattering. When a car sits for a while, the valve springs can force the oil out of these hydraulic cushions. It then takes a few seconds of a running engine for the oil pressure to refill them. Modern engine oil, especially synthetic, is vulnerable to this as the viscosity doesn't vary as much due to temperature. I still agree that the dealer should check it out! Make sure they document the issue also.

Sounds like the Hydraulic Lifters or if the oil filter has a Anti Drainback valve, it may have failed.

Yep !

Just got my oil changed but it still makes noise at start up !!

Not a Genesis owner yet, but was impressed with the car after a test drive.
I own a 300m and experience the same noise ( valve tapping) sometimes when first starting the car for just an instant. I also noticed that when it was near time to change oil it happened more often, but after changing oil it would stop for awhile. I figured it was like OneShot started, it was all related to oil drain down. It has over 130,000 miles and it has done this for as long as I can remember. It also seemed to be affected by quality of oil filter used and length of time between oil changes. I am using 10w30 Mobile 1, and change oil every 4-6k.
