  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I know I should never have my Genesis washed by a machine... But have to live with this.
The question is: The Shell stations offer a "The works" washing that is very complete and includes some under car washing. Well, I've heard some horror stories related to electric/electronic parts soaked wet by improper washing.
Any feedback/experience on using/not this option?
The cost/benefit is by far the better.
Thanks in advance.

I've used automatic washers for years when I was too busy to do my own. Most of the under-body washing is concentrated on the wheel wells and should not be a problem for electric parts. I think any good drive on a rainy day gets plenty of moisture in the engine and under the car. Just my opinion.

At most automated car washes I have seen, the underbody wash spray (if purchased) is applied equally across the entire width the car at an automated car wash. When I lived where it snowed, I did not hesitate to use it because the benefits of removing salt, sand, slush, etc from the underside of the car outweighed the risk of water damage (at least in the winter time).

Now that I live where it only rarely snows, I don't get that service anymore on the few occasions where I go to a fully automated car wash. I do wash out my wheel wells with hand-sprayer at a self service car wash.

Thank you both for your points.
I'll probably use it on a long interval basis. No snow/salt problem here.

Washed the car today.
The car wash option is "The works" (8.00)
No problems at all.
Even the surface wash seems better. Apparently a wax is also applied.
The under body washing did not cause brake, coughing or any electrical problem.
In summary: approved.

Do not know where you heard about horror tales of underbody car wash. What would keep the bottom of the car dry while driving in heavy rain?
When I lived in Ohio I used the under car wash at least every other week during the winter.

I have a C280 97 which manual warns on washing of engine & surroundings Vs electrical/electronic modules.
It problably refers to direct hose washing. (lots of pressure) (still used in Brazil)
A friend of mine almost lost his Mercedes in a relatively modest pond after some heavy rain. (probably some modules totally immersed)
Anyway, fears gone...
