upgrade from 12 R Spec to 15 5.0 ???

OK, I've got a '12 R Spec that I've owned since new and now have 40K miles on it. I've been toying with the idea of trading up to a '15 5.0 ultimate. Well yesterday as I was looking at the line of cars that just rolled off the ship, I spot a Montecito Blue one sitting there in the front. So I stop and take a look. What a beautiful color. I told the wife about it when I got home and she said she'd like to see it.

So later that day, we drove back to my work and over by the cars. She saw the color and said she understood why I liked it. As we were looking, I spot a 5.0 one sitting down at the end of the line with ivory interior. She really liked it so I got the color code off the window as I didn't know at the time what the color was.

As I was sitting in our genesis waiting on her later, I decided to call my dealer and ask about the car. So now he's running the numbers for me so I can see if it's within the budget. He asked if I could get the VIN for him and I have it now to give to him when I call later. He also said he's very interested in my '12 R Spec as he saw it when I took my daughter there to buy her new car, a '14 Elantra GT hatchback.

So now my question is, is it that big of a difference between the '12 R Spec and the '15 Ultimate to be worth me pursuing the deal? We really like our R Spec so it would have to be a big difference in ride and comfort for us to change. All of the gadgets are nice but not a reason for me to swap.

So please give me your input, especially if you have owned both.

Take a '15 out for a test drive. You should be able to make that decision on your own.

Everyone here is going to gush over the '15, and probably rightly so. I'm sure it's a great car. But the Gen 1 were also great cars before the Gen 2 came out.

I would love a '15, but I am very content in my '13, esp. with the deal I got.

Crusty, the handling upgrade is very noticeable between the 2012 and the 2015. I love my 2015, but a little of me misses my 2012 5.0 (non R-Spec), though probably for nostalgic reasons more than anything (and because it was/is beautiful).

Here's the one thing I wish I'd tried before trading in my 2012, as everyone who's had them installed has mentioned how much it tightens up the handling on the 1st gen. If I'd liked the handling a bit more, maybe it would have been enough to hang onto the 2012 a bit longer.

Otherwise, there's not much to regret with the 2015 (other than financial hit, of course).

I had a '12 RSpec with similar mileage. Great car. Traded it for a '13 V6, which I actually liked better. The V6 is a bit lighter on front wheels and it shows in handling.
Compared '15 V6 and my '13 V6 back-to-back - hands down the '15 was a better "ride", BUT I did not test the limits. The '15 is considerably heavier - check Edmunds for weight and specs.
I seriously considered the '15 5.0, but instead bought a '14 Equus. Both are heavy cars and the weight difference is less than 20 lb, according to Edmunds. I was able to buy the '14 for $45K or so; and could have bought a discounted '15Rspec for considerably less than $50K. Check Autotrader.
Comparing the '14 Equus (Signature model) and the '15 5.0, the '15 has some nice new features like heads up display, but the overall content of the Equus is at a significantly higher quality level. I like the '14 grill better, but that is just my preference. Equus does not come in blue - colors are limited.
For me the Equus is the far better choice. I'm a retired geezer with time to travel - did a 8,000 mi. trip this winter; and enjoyed the Equus more than any previous Genesis.

I have the Montecito Blue with Beige interior. It is a beautiful color for sure. Can't help you with the comparison as I never owned a Hyundai before but I can say this is by far the best car I have ever owned.

Thanks for the input. If the numbers look good, I'll go to the local dealer and test drive one, but I'm not buying from them, long story. I've got a better dealer to deal with about 75 miles away.

rey, I haven't looked at the Equus because I do not like the side body style, looks too much like a Dodge charger to me with the rear fender line. Not a big fan.

Always forward, I've always been a big fan of a Gunmetal gray, to me, the Montecito Blue looks like the blueing one would do to a gun barrel. I love it.

I went from a 12 Rspec to a Monticeto Blue/Ivory interior. Guess we think alike. the difference is night and day. Do yourself a favour and test drive it, then and only then will you partially understand the major improvements and what an amazing job Hyundai has done on the Gen2. I say partially because as time goes on it just gets better and better until you get to the point and say to yourself. Wow, can't even imagine going back to a Gen 1.

Just got off the phone with my dealer. He is waiting on a Email with the new incentives that are coming out.

But I ran into a little snag, the car I want and have the VIN for is not in the system yet and may actually be a '16 model year car.

But I'll know when it leaves the lot and goes into processing to enter the country. Then I'll have to get hold of my buddy who works at the processing site and see where it is. That and let the dealer know it's "in country".

Dealer said there are very few 5.0's coming in.

This VIN was for a car you saw on a lot here? Seems like it cannot be 2016 if it's already here. Can you post the VIN?

It's not on a dealer lot. I work at a port where the cars come into the country via ship, are off loaded into parking lots around the area, and are eventually sent into processing where they clean them up, inspect them thru customs, and ship them out to the dealers. So I see almost every Genney that comes off the boat on the lower west coast.

It takes several months from the time they hit the ground here until they are loaded on trucks and shipped out to dealers. I posted up some pictures when the Gen 2 first hit the shore, before they were on dealers showrooms.

Take it around the block.
You'll love the suspension and handling, much improved over our cars, especially driving on the rough pavement, small potholes - the shaking steering wheel is almost non exist.
Before you go, make sure the tires are properly inflated to ~33-38 psi .....I've seen them as high as 48-50psi!

I own both 2012 5.0 and 15 V8 Ultimate. Both amazing.. Ultimate, in a different league.. More luxury, slower, different emotions experienced while driving or riding. I bet if your 2012 has rigid collars, the 2012 feels more sporty and connected to the road IMO. When someone asks which one I want to pull up to client in, the 2015 all the way.. I also love the app for the 2015. Use it all the time to get the car ready, send locations to the nav (with calendar integration or search). Head up display, once you have do not want to do without. Hang a 20oz drink bottle on the lower quadrant of the steering wheel while on highway, it self drives for a long time (thinks your hand is on the wheel and does not kick in the 15 second nanny self drive cutoff). BUT, the 2012 will be faster, and likely you will feel more connected to it and the road. If you can, keep your depreciated 2012, go for the 2015 too. Have two.. 😎
