  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I converted some wave files to MP3 and put them on a USB memory stick and they play fine in my Genny. But, according to the owner's maual:

• To use an external USB device,
make sure the device is not
mounted when starting up the
vehicle and mount the device
after starting up.
• If you start the vehicle when the
USB device is mounted, it may
damage the USB device. (USB is
not ESA)
• If the vehicle is started up or
turned off while the external USB
device is connected, the external
USB device may not work.

That's just crazy (or is it?).

I leave my thumb drive in the port all the time with no ill effects. Others have reported the same thing. This may just be CYA on Hyundai's part to protect themselves against folks claiming that Hyundai electronics fried their thumb drives.

My thumb drive has resided in the socket for about 13,000 miles without any problem.

Same here. However, every once and a while it does not boot when the car system comes up, requiring me to pull it and re-insert. And now that I think of it, perhaps I will try that the next time my voice command system goes mute, and see if that solves that issue too.

I leave the USB plugged in all the time. What the user manual suggests is not at all reasonable.

One thing I've noticed is that if you have VBR-encoded MP3's, then when you start the car and it starts playing mid-song it would often hang/loop at the the end of the song. Apparently the system is resuming playback from a different position (time-wise) than it thinks it is, due to incorrect offset calculation. So the song ends but the system thinks there should be more to play. This didn't happen every time, but often enough to become a real nuisance for me so I re-encoded my music as constant bitrate (waste of space, but at least playback is flawless now).

I've had the car "lose" the USB drive and think it wasn't connected a couple of times, but I don't think this has to do with leaving it in, because at least one time it happened to me after the car had been running for a while.

My biggest complaint with the USB is how incredibly slow it is scrolling through songs and folders. Totally inexcusable.

I wonder what the problem is - my 16GB thumb drive is about 2/3 full and scrolling is lightning fast (I currently have 2225 files in 92 folders totaling ~10GB). Maybe if I had another 5GB of data it would be slower, but I haven't noticed any incremental change in performance as I added additional content along the way.

Perhaps is the manner you have your music organized (well).

I don't think it's a size issue. Currently I've got a 32gb drive with about 27GB in it, but that's at 320 CBR so it's not really that many songs/albums. I've tried with different USB drives and different sizes. It also doesn't seem to matter how full the drive is. What I'm seeing is a pause of a full second when scrolling to the next screen. If you're not seeing any pause at all when scrolling to the next "screen" of data (whether you're in a list of folders or songs), I'd love to know which exact USB drive you have and I'll give it a try. Also how it's formatted could be useful (allocation size).

That's got nothing to do with it. How you organize your music may change how many screens you have to scroll through, but has no impact on the delay when scrolling screens. I originally had a flat structure with one folder per album. This can be more convenient than navigating a tree structure as long as scroll performance is good. But since I'm getting such horrible scrolling from the DIS, I've re-organized using a genre/band/album structure. This reduces the number of screens I have to scroll though, but the pause when going to next screen is still there and still infuriating.

Interestingly, 4GB MP3 DVD's don't have this problem, it's just the USB.

And while I'm bitching, how come the voice commands that work for MP3 CD/DVD don't work with the USB drive?

I'm using an HP ([ame="http://www.amazon.com/HP-v125w-Flash-Drive-P-FD16GHP125-EF/dp/B001QVN9Y6"]Amazon.com: HP v125w 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD16GHP125-EF: Electronics[/ame]). I have the touch screen AV/Nav, not DIS: I don't know if there is any difference between the two with respect to USB performance.

I think there's a very good chance that's the difference here, as the USB functionality is through DIS for me.

On a related subject, has anybody else had any problems charging their phone from the USB port or from the 12v Power Sockets with a USB converter inserted? I have a Nokia N97 Smart Phone and use the USB cable to charge the phone from my laptop computer with no issues. If I plug the USB cable into the Genny USB port it won't charge. The system sees the phone as a remote storage device. Likewise if I use a USB converter in the 12v sockets it still won't charge the phone. Right now I have to use a 12vdc/115vac plug-in inverter and then use the mains charger to charge the phone.
