  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all, I’m new to the site but have been interested in the 2015 genesis 5.0 for some time now. They have one that just popped up used by me. It has 77k miles on it. The dealer just replaced the transmission on it along with rear brakes. It would be my daily driver if I bought it but I wouldn’t be putting many miles on it. Mostly would use it for my weekend car I guess you can say. I see reliability concerns when I was reading up some reviews on google. What are y’all thoughts on it? Thanks alot

I had a 2015 3.8. The head unit was replaced under warranty but no other problems. Seems the 2015 had some electronics issued but otherwise OK. IMO, the head unit is the biggest risk and the 5.0 is a great engine.
My 2018 has a few more features, but that is expected with new models, but the drivability is very similar. If the price is right . . . .

I plan on keeping my 15 5.0 AWD for many more years. The only time it's been at a dealer was for a transfer case issue (a couple of years ago) which was replaced along with the computer control. It was the only issue I've had and other than that I just do regular maintenance myself. The car still looks and drives like new and is all I could ask for in a luxury sedan so yes, it's a keeper!

Only problem I heard is that any dealer issue not under warranty can be costly. Were your issues still under warranty? The car offered for sale will be out of warranty if I’m not mistaken other than the brand new transmission they said they would give me a 1year 12k mile warranty

Indeed, this vehicle seem to have too many bits replaced, if it was me I would get at least 3 year 36k bumper to bumper cover.
As mentioned before engine, Transmission as well as electronics repairs tend to be expensive.

My 205 5.0 has been good in the year and a half that I have owned it. No problems with engine or tranny. It’s on 88k miles. Some common issues have already been pointed out.
Some of the paint, wapecially around the pano sunroof and the front fascia is peeling. Some of the exterior rubber seems to be cheap.

It was under warranty, but now it's not under any warranty. I don't buy long term warranties either. If something major goes on it, I won't be taking it to a dealer. I would search out used parts on-line and have a local mechanic do the job. If there is something using computers that only the dealer could handle, I'd still have a local mechanic do the mechanical part of the repair then have the dealer do the "reprogramming". Of course, I'd decide first if the expected cost of repair makes sense or just sell the car as parts first.
Life is full of risk.

Thanks for all the input....jimmy, you aren’t ever lying. Life is full of risk.

I tend to agree about purchasing the "warranties". I've heard tons of horror stories about those companies denying claims for reasons deeply buried in fine print... I keep a savings account for the sole purpose of paying for repairs instead of paying those premiums. You would be surprised how much you can accumulate when you kick in a few hundred a month over a couple of years. The car has been reliable enough that I've only had to touch it once - $500 for a new alternator that my long time Indie shop just installed. I have enough in the kitty now to cover most any major expense. All the normal wear items (battery, brakes, tires & etc.) I tend to pay for out of pocket.

I would have to say that this car, so far has been much more reliable @ 84K miles (I'm 2nd owner, bought @ 62K) than my old Infiniti G37s sedan. By that mileage had already eaten an alternator, AC compressor, throttle body assemblies (2, replace in pairs), cam position sensors (again, 2) and a water pump...

Jesus that’s alot. I’m looking to be smart. Want this car but might stick to the good ole American challenger rt and or srt8. I could get an extended warranty but for what they are asking plus warranty and ttl I’m not paying 24,500 out the door for a car with 75k on it already. Thanks for all the input fellas. Happy holidays to you and yours.

I was talking about the Infiniti needing all those repairs. In comparison the Genesis has been relatively trouble free...

Oh ok gotcha. Thanks. My bad. I misunderstood. Still thinking if I want to pay 24k for it. I know the dealer just replaced the transmission and rear brake pads. Also cabin filter, glove box and start button. He just told me it has a cracked w/s as well lol.

Genesis branded cars were from 2017 ( i think) , and 2016 was still Hyundai Genesis . The 2016 models would be also out of the CPO program now . So it will be hard to get a CPO Hyundai Genesis now .

Some of us got the 5 year unlimited and 10 year engine warranties due to being CPO . Now it looks like all the Hyundai Genesis inventory is non CPO , and would need a 3rd party warranty . (have not heard of Hyundai dealers offering the hyundai america extended warranty now ).

2015 is now a 5+ year old car . See if you can get a 2016 / 2017 5.0 (if available and fits your budget)

My suggestion is to look around some more and find a Genesis 5.0 with less miles. The price and the miles are out of line in my opinion. In Florida there are some (not a lot) of lower mile 2015/2016 Genesis for sale and for less money. Providing your not seeking an ultimate model. Good Luck.

They are asking 19,600. So I was thinking 5k for warranty of some sort and ttl. I’m in New Orleans. Texas looks like the way to go for me if I still wanted one. They have them a good bit cheaper.

I've had good luck with the last three Chrysler products that I've had. A 2013 Challenger R/T, 2013 Chrysler 300 C, and a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also have had good luck with Hyundai products. My low mileage 2015 3.8 Genesis is a great car. I must say that Hyundai's service department, as least the one that I use is far superior to Chrysler Dealers.

Very nice. I’m definitely seesawing on it lol

Just take your time and think it out.
As far as used cars go, I try to drive as many of a particular model as possible... So you can get an idea of what a "good one" is supposed to feel like. When I was looking at the Genesis, I drove 4 of them before I decided. Mileage isn't necessarily the best indicator. The one I ended up buying had 62k miles on it and it was in much better shape than 2 that I drove that had between 25 and 35k. The 25k one in particular was kind of a rag...!
