Valet keys don't open the trunk

I had an issue lately where the fob wouldn't open the trunk. Thanks to these forums, I learned about the valet key switch in the glove compartment. Problem solved.

But during this process, I tried to open the trunk with valet key in the keyhole, and neither of my keys work. The keys only go in about 3/8 of an inch. Am I missing something or did I get the wrong keys from the factory?

Did you try the keys with front door?

If it works in the door, try some WD-40 in the trunk lock. And make sure key is turned the right way (I don't think they are bi-directional).

I don't think of the mechanical key as the "valet key" since you're supposed to keep it while giving the fob & car to a valet for parking. That way you can disable the trunk electric release with the switch in glove box and lock the glove box with the key... thus keeping the valet dude out of both the glove box and the trunk. The physical key is supposed to work the trunk, glove box, and door.

If your keys work the glove box and door but not the trunk something is wrong with the trunk lock. On my car I have to be more careful getting the key into the trunk lock compared to the doors - it has to be lined up pretty much perfectly.

Does anyone out there trust their Genny to a dingleberry parking jockey? I sure don't.

Any biz that has valet-only parking doesn't get my biz.

I know it works on the glove compartment, but never tried the door. Assuming that works, then I agree that it must be something with the truck lock. I need to bring it in for some other warranty repairs, so I guess I'll add that to the list.

mine didn't turn the trunk lock at all either, worked fine everywhere else.
Hyundai just sprayed some wd-40 or something similar in there and it works fine now. i'm guessing its just dust and dirt as the rear of my genny gets dirty so easy.

WD-40 will clean the lock but that'll be a temporary fix. Auto parts stores sell small tubes of "door lock de-icer" stuff - basically a teeny tooth-paste type tube of powered graphite. This lubricates the lock guts and lasts for quite some time. To use: stick the end of the tube into the lock and give it a quick & hard squeeze to blast graphite into the lock. Then insert the key and rotate the lock a couple times to spread the graphite around. You might be surprised at how much easier the lock works after this. Wipe the key off before putting it back in your pocket though!
