  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Folks,

I saw these valve stem caps on the "Genesis Store" part of the forum, and I thought they looked pretty neat. I thought I'd search around the internet a bit to see what people were saying about them before I ordered from the forum store (might as well support the forum, right). There's a couple people that say to definitely never even think about buying these, because they somehow corrode and then become permanently attached to the valve stem, and that some people had damage to the tires from them as a result. The reason cited was that apparently these caps, being all metal, result in a metal-vs-metal articulation somewhere in the valve stem, which then engenders corrosion etc. etc. It's not 100% clear that the items these other people were talking about are exactly the same as the items being sold here (though they look the same), so I'm not sure what to do.

It looks like a few people bought these valve stem caps here. Can anyone that has bought these shed any light on any of this, or verify that they've had them on there for awhile without problems?

Thanks.

I have not bought these caps but did have some aluminum caps on my G37. If you check your air pressure every 1-2 months then I cannot see how they can get corroded and stuck on. If you do see corrosion, clean them with WD40 and you should be okay.

Valve stems and shrader valves are not steel but I think a brass alloy of sorts. I’ve run metal caps before and have them on my Miata with no issues. That car is more than 10 years old. I think your talking about dis-similar metal corrosion which when moisture is present can set up a galvantic corrosion. Under normal conditions don’t see this being a problem. You will be removing those caps every now and then to check air pressure. If you lived up North where salt is used on the roads and you drove the car very infrequently and check you air pressure once a year, maybe you might see an issue. A drop of oil, WD-40 as mentioned or a tiny amount of anti-corrosion compound like used on exhaust manifold studs would mitigate any issues.

Just a spot of Never-Seeze on the threads one time will work for a few years. But remember, just a spot because a little goes along way. Also works excellent on lug studs and back of wheel where contact is with brake rotor/hub. Easy on off for the wheel if a light coat of anti-seze is used.

I swear I thought that said "Never-Sneeze."

I found metal caps that match my wheels pretty darn close.

Never had a problem with mine but I do check the air pressure every week.

As mentioned I had a set of Infiniti caps on my G37. Went to Discount Tire for a rotation as I had many times, and the guys there replaced them with the cheap plastic grey caps. I went back in to ask and they all played dumb like they had no idea what I was talking about. I didn't replace them. Consider removing them when going in for tire service. (I didn't buy the G37 set - they were a gift).

Hi. Any metal-type cap gets a drop of 3-in-1 oil in this climate whenever it is removed. No issues.
