  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Why is it disrespectful? And to whom?!

Personally, I think it's sehr wunderbar to have participants from other countries. It brings a fresh perspective that we don't always benefit from. I am fortunate ich hat drei jahren Deutsch studiert, so I understood most of it. If not... Google translate is your friend.

Herzlich Wilkommen, Pred-GDR. :)
Google translate was definitely my friend😂.

Can't polish, hard to repaint, can't really expect a car to never be scratched. If I wanted matte that badly I would get a wrap.

Can't polish: Definitely true
Hard to repaint: True. However, color matching is difficult regardless.
Stratches: I agree and could make the same argument with regard to a "typical" paint job. There's at least the possibility of correction on a typical paint job depending on the depth of the scratch. Matte, not so much.

Wraps: I agree that this would be the safest way to go. There are lots of colors to choose from as well. In fact, I will likely go this route if my factory paint ever receives any noticeable damage. Might do it anyway. I've got to spend $ on something 😂😂.

Tri-coat paint (pearl, candy, heavy metal flakes, etc.) can be notoriously difficult to color match too. Even "regular" two-stage solids and metallics colors quite often need some tinting to get the match close enough, especially if the car has been under the sun for a few years. Paint job shop would usually have you bring a painted item (like a gas cap cover) to them for the tinting. I've done that and the result was still off. But at least the correction process is well known to most automotive refinishers and they can usually blend panels well enough to fool most people's eyes.

Matte finish brings a whole 'nother level of difficulty. The same problem with hue match is still there, but unlike with glossy paint, where if the DOI is off, you can just take a wheel to it and buff it out to a mirror shine. Nor can you blend into adjacent panel, then buff out. I've never shot matte paint and frankly would rather not ever try.

That said, everything has its place. Because of its various challenges to get done right, matte paint remains rather rare and expensive. That, in and of itself, presents an aura of exclusivity and added prestige. If this were a lease car and you don't mind babying it for 3yrs (most owners at this caliber do anyway), it might be worth the fancy.

Most folks in the know would agree though, that hand washing is the only way to go with matte paint.

I took some photos of the Melbourne Gray Matte G70 that I had available from GENESIS for my June test drive. My GPA (Genesis Personal Assistant) came to my house with it: fresh from a car wash. She also told me that she drives it through a car wash before each customer visit. Since I've never seen a Genesis before, and certainly not in a dull color here in Germany, I can't make any comparisons, of course. But I still found the color beautiful, because it's really something different here on German roads. In summer I will of course prefer hand washing (that's fun too), but in autumn and winter I'm not afraid of a car wash. A special convertible wash program without wax additives will not ruin the car right away. Hopefully it will be delivered soon, I still have to wait 4 long months. However, my G70 comes in Makalu Gray Matte, the Melbourne Gray is no longer available for the 2023 model.

Hey group!
Thanks for all the feedback...pros and cons. I think it will prove valuable to others considering alternative finishes.

I went and looked at the 2024 matte white G80 today. To me it is is the most beautiful sedan available, above Mercedes, Audi, you name it,

I considered a matte finish, but after hearing how specialized the paint cleaning and maintenance was, I decided to pass. I'm anal about keeping my exterior cleaning (it has been ceramic coated) but the additional care with matte was a turn off. If I really wanted matt I'd go with a wrap. So because I wanted white paint, I had to compare the Alta White with Uyuni White. The Uyuni White easily won me over. I love it!

I also looked at both whites and the Uyuni won!!

Awesome! Did you get the black interior? Mine has the red stitching.

Funny that the Alta White and Uyuni White are pretty close at a distance. Uyuni White is definitely not a pearl white. It does, though, have metallic in it which the Alta White does not have.

I think Uyuni White with red interior is the ultimate combo. I almost pulled the trigger on a '23 G70 Sport Prestige in that colorway, and it was gorgeous! In the end, we ended up going with a '23 Stinger in Snow White Pearl with red interior, which is pretty darn close.

BTW, I think Uyuni is a pearl white. The difference between metallic and pearl is the size of the reflective flakes. Alta is a non-metallic glossy white.
