  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
Equus (2011-2016)
Just bought a 2016 EQ Signature and noticed from the first test drive that the car had a vibration at idle. Sometimes its subtle, but then after a good drive its more pronounced. Took it to my dealer and was told there was nothing wrong that they could detect even though the vibration were clearly felt from the floor and in the seat.

This being my first (and probably last) EQ I wanted to ask if the 5.0 suffered from some crazy vibration, or has anyone else experienced this and did it turn out to be bad mounts?

I took the car in for a second opinion and was told that the engine just develops this vibration over time, and in some cases its actually worse than my car. I am floored that a car that originally cost over 60K develops a idle vibration over time and there is nothing that can be done. I may just pop for replacing the motor mounts myself to see if it calms the vibration I feel at idle. Its present in the steering wheel, in the seat and on the floor. Shame!

Anyone else experience vibration issues on Equus? I am looking to buy, and one of the listings reported similar issues. Hyundai bought back that vehicle and rebuilt it. Now I am wondering if this is a common problem, or just a few occurences out of thousands.

Depends on what you mean by "at idle". When stopped at a light in Drive and foot on brake, yes, the transmission on my 2011 EQUUS trys to grab and the car vibrates. If I pop it in neutral, it calms down nicely. So for me, it is not the engine causing the vibration so much as the transmission.

The 2011 has a different transmission than yours.

Does anyone know if the transmission can be programmed when to "engage"? Say, if the car idle speed is 600 rpm, can the transmission not start to engage until 650 rpm, for example?

I have not had the motor mounts checked, but the car has been serviced and repaired at the dealer and no mention has been made of the mounts needing replacement. I have read other comments about the vibration you mention on the Genesis/EQUUS, with dealer saying this is "normal" (which means they don't know how to do anything about it?).

That is exactly the issue I am experiencing. The dealer did check the mounts and said they were fine and I was really at a loss at what causes the vibration at idle and in gear. I agree with the idea of raising the idle speed because its buttery smooth above the set idle point.

Have the dealer do a "re-learn" on the transmission.

Thank you for responding. Yes they did that, but i have found that the car settles back into its massage at idle setting (lol)

Well I’m not super familiar with the Equus motor since I haven’t had mine for very long but you might want to check the MAF sensor (assuming there is one) and either clean it or replace it. On most cars this is a very easy job. Also could be the throttle body that needs a cleaning, which is a bit more involved than the MAF but should still be fairly simple to clean with basic tools.

Definitely not above this. I planned on picking up some GDI cleaner and spraying it through the intake past the MAF and seeing if its a carbon issue or something. Im still learning myself.

The dealer transmission relearn is a good idea. There is a TSB on it.

On checking motor mounts, if the car vibrates in Drive at a stop, try putting in Reverse with brake on. If it still vibrates, it is probably not the mounts. If it makes a big difference, probably bad mounts.

Nature of the beast with a 5.0 V8. Mine has a bit of a vibration but it's barely noticeable unless you pay attention to it. Lot of power in these engines

Thanks for sharing. The dealer has done this a few times but it does not have any impact on the vibration at idle.

the TAU is definitely packing a big punch. Love the engine. Hate the vibration :)

So you mean put the car in reverse and then put my foot on the brake? I'll try that.

Late to the thread, but wanted to make sure and mention that the mounts are not an easy eyeball inspection to see if they are good. It's a hydraulic mount, and like anything else they wear out in a number of ways. They are easy if they came apart or disintegrated on the exterior, but that's not common.

The best way I have seen to check them is by putting the car in gear quickly after a cold start. The car, if cold goes high idle/choke-like initially. If you have a friend start and put in gear, you can see excessive movement and sometimes even hear slight metal to metal touch. If you do the mounts are done. It is a common culprit for Vibration at cruise/highway speeds, and masks itself like an out of balance tire.
