  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Vibration when braking

I was looking at another auto forum (not Hyundai or Genesis) and a guy had 4 new tires put on his car at Discount Tire. The brakes pulsated a bit after the tire install. He took it back and they re-torqued the wheels and all is fine now. Discount Tire is one of the better companies out there, but everyone makes a mistake now and then.

I have vibration during braking...It feels like warped rotors.... I can check to see if they're warped myself... heck, i can even replace myself... my question is, "are rotors a warranty or wear and tear item?". I'm at 22K miles.... I'd prefer not to incur any out of pocket expense if this is covered under warranty.

Thanks!!

Usually a wear item unless you can prove a problem from a defect. Difficult to do.

There is some good information here about rotors

I'm really curious if everyone here (and everywhere else) that repeatedly uses the phrase "warped rotors" realizes that rotors don't actually warp.

Cold water hitting the hot rotors can result in warping or as ifonline said they don't actually warped you get uneven rotor wear instead. Riding your brakes as well because you are generating excessive heat.

You're correct!

There can be a difference in; lateral runout, disc thickness variation, cold bake roughness. Rotors are cast in extreme heat and “warping” a rotor would require a similar application of extreme heat, which is impossible. Discs can crack, break and develop irregularities which lead to pulsation but it's not warping.

People and even technician have adopted the phrase but there is no such thing as a warped rotor. It's just vocal shorthand.

.

The best you can expect is either replacement or turning the existing rotors on a brake lathe. If you can prove it's a manufacturing defect, they would probably replace them free of charge but as it's already been stated, it's difficult to do.

I may just get them turned... I know a guy so I can get it done for a reasonable price.
