  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This is my first car that has any sort of voice command capability, and it's taken me a week or more to find the time to get into it, but hoo whee...I'm impressed!

With my 15-year-old's son's help, the phone connection came up smoothly (he laughs when he's reminded that his dad's an exec in a high-tech company; he thinks I'm a complete Luddite, and he's not all wrong ;-). Again, without a reference point, I'm very impressed with how well the system works. I can reel off a 10-digit number pretty fast and the system picks it up and runs with it.

In particular, maneuvering between the various audio options is really slick. Some things aren't worth the effort (e.g. switching between adjacent tracks, etc.), but I can keep my eyes on the road and tell the system to do all sorts of switches among the various audio options.

I'll still need a few days (weeks?) to work my way through all this, but I'm convinced that I'll get a lot of use out of this voice command capability when all is said and done.

I was messing with the nav screen at a dealership and figured out how to do most things however how do you access the voice recognition functions for the navigation and I didn't realize you could control audio functions this way as well. How do you activate all of that? Thanks!

Duaine,

There is a voice command button on the steering wheel below the vol/channel buttons. The manual has a whole page of recognizable commands...

I have this in my vehicle as well - and I haven't even tried more than a couple of options. There's a lot to learn with these high tech cars. I just don't have the time to figure everything out. :p

Sal - I know just what you mean. In the long run, I'll probably rely on my teenage son to ferret out the most obscure things this car's capable of tech-wise. As with most tech toys, one needs to strike a balance between what one CAN do versus what's truly helpful/practical. For example, is it really more efficient for me to hit the VC button just to change tracks, when I can just as easily give the DIS knob a quick spin? Not really...

Duaine, to elaborate on Simon's response to your inquiry, it looks like voice commands can control just about everything that the DIS function can. The manual (or on-screen prompts) will take you through the basic commands, most of which I'm finding to be pretty intuitive anyway ("Disc Commands...Disc 3...Track 4", for example. Or "FM radio...Next Selection", etc.). Let 'er rip!

I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I buy the car so I have a bit of a head start. Thanks guys!!!

Hey Guys I got another question that I wanted to ask you about the GPS navigation.
I stopped at the dealer and we took the car out and I programmed the navigation to take us back to the dealership from about 10 miles out.

Now before I ask the question I want to say I have a Garmin 2720 Streetfinder portable GPS. Maybe it's got me spoiled I don't know? But I do like it because you can customize many things on it.

I have mine set up to show the current MPH, direction, current time, arrival time, miles to destination, miles to next turn, name of next road/street to turn on. You can see all this at a glance. It also has arrows that come up on the screen showing the exact place to turn, zig zag or whatever. You know like a quick left right or whatever the case may be.

The big thing to me is that my Garmin always announces the names of the streets/highways to turn on as well as any destination or or whatever name you give a way point.

Now back to the Genesis is there a setting to get it to announce the names of streets, highways and destination names? I really like that feature on the Garmin and quite often don't even have to look at the screen when you want to watch heavy traffic say in a major city. Also like at highway speeds it will give you good advance warnings, maybe a half mile or slightly more before a turn and then again at about 500-1000 feet. At faster speeds it gives you more distance notice and at lower speeds not as distant.

Also maybe I am just to use to the Garmin but I found the screen a bit confusing. When I got close to a turn I then got a split screen with the map and car location on the left and on the right it looked like a straight highway which I assumed I was on and an intersection coming up. But it didn't show any car movement on that side coming up to the intersection. It looked kind of like a close up shot but didn't have the car symbol on there. The only thing I noticed was like a bar graph getting smaller the closer I got to the turn. Also it just said turn next right and then you heard a beep when you were suppose to turn. It didn't however tell you by name where to turn.

Maybe its just me but I found it confusing compared to my Garmin. I know that it is something I may have to get use to. But surely with a 40 gig. (I think it is) hard drive you would think it would announce street and highway names when my little old 2 gig (I think) does all that.

I'm not knocking it yet but just wanted to ask you guys with the Genesis what you have found out so far? I did however notice after punching up restaurants close by that it was quite a bit more extensive than my Garmin.

Oh and I assume that you can update the Genesis navigation system just like a Garmin. Any idea of how you do it and how much that will cost us? I assume you get a dvd to download to the hard drive to update it but I am only guessing.

Thanks guys for your continued help!!!

Duaine:

Select: Driver Information System Manual
Goto: Page 171
More than you ever wanted to know, however:

- This sytem does not 'speak' street names
- Upgrades are unknown at this time [according to my dealer], but will probably be a dealer service option
- Since this system is NAVTEQ based [I think] a future upgrade may have 'speak' names
- The POI database is huge
- The manual explains the 'split screen' functions pretty well. Will take a little practice to 'change' from the Garmin.
- And wait till you see the NAV Traffic integration!

Hey thanks for all of that information!!! I finally got owners manuals woo hoo!!!
