If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have the 2012 Genesis 3.8 with touchscreen Nav. I finally was able to transfer contacts from my Blackberry 9930 into the phonebook, but I am not having much luck with voice dialing by name. Stopped by the dealer today for help and was told that it takes a week or two for the car to learn my voice. I have run the speaker adaptation twice and probably tried 30-40 different names. I think it got only 1 name right. Is this normal? Any tips on how to make it work better? By the way, my speech is totally standard with no accent at all.

I don't remember any adaptation or training period. Voice commands in my '11 Genesis (including voice dialing) worked from the get go, though ambient noise can reduce recognition accuracy tremendously.

The strange thing is that all of the other commands for the radio, nav, xm, etc. work fine. The problem is that it is not recognizing names from the phonebook. Many times it will cancel out after 3 tries. Other times, it offers to dial a totally unrelated name.

My voice dialing is acting up now (not repeating the name) since I changed head units last week. But I've been very impressed with the voice software. In my car it recognizes command and names about 95% of the time. it even works well if a window is rolled down and there is some noise. Also, ther was absolutely no learning curve for voice recognition.

I don't think your system is working correctly. It is either your phone or the voice recognition software. You may want to try another phone to pinpoint the problem. If another phone works much better, it is a phone or phone compatability issue.

Thanks LA Genesis. I just tried my wife's iPhone. All contacts transferred over, but the voice dialing is still not working. Looks like a need to make a trip to the dealer.

Problem solved!!!!
Thanks to a very persistent service tech at my local dealer, the problem turned out to be my use of all caps for last names. Only the first letter of the first and last names can be capitalized, or the system will not recognize the name. When I changed all of my contacts to this format, it worked 100%!

Hi LA Genesis

I had the head unit replaced shortly after delivery and I don't have the names repeated back to either. Also check the center dashboard display. Do you have the compass and xmradio satellite images? I dont. I took it back once and they said they would have to replace it again. I didn't bother. Maybe I should.

Seattle Genesis: You and I are having the same issues. I'm waiting for head unit #3 because I want to hear the names repeated back to me. I hope, but now doubt, the new head unit fixes the problem. You are the third poster to indicate that replacement head units come with new menu settings and the name repeat issue. It also doesn't repeat street names when I input addresses in the NAV system. The head unit I have now made numerous changes. I'll check on the XM and compass image in the center display. They used to be there but I'm not sure if they still with my current replacement head unit.

My radio tech told me some replacement units are brand new and some are rebuilds. He thinks the rebuilds come ith the name repeat issue. I don't know what to believe but I know these head units suck.

Timeout helped me get my menu settings back. See the thread below called "Audio problem" to read more.

You do realize there is a selectable function in the setup menu to either have the unit repeat the name back to you or not? I hate having it repeat so I elected to shut mine off on both my previous 4.6 and now my 5.0. Both of my units were the tech package units with DIS wheel on the console if that has anything to do with it.

Thanks for the response but we're not talking about the same thing. When the original head unit gets replaced some other changes take place. It's happened to several of us--maybe all of us. When I say "Call Midnight Sun--work" the unit will repeat "call work" and leave off Midnight Sun. My settings are to leave the voice repeat always on because I want to confirm the system heard me and is dialing the correct phone number (without looking at the display). Also my new head unit started showing height and suspension settings on the systems menu. See the attached photo. It's pretty strange. I ordered my first replacement unit because my surround sound wouldn't stay checked on. I lost the name repeat function when we installed the replcement head unit. A third head unit has been ordered.

Is this happening exclusively on the touchscreen model?

Mine is the Lex with tech package. No touch screen. I just added a photo above this post to show the vehicle height and suspension settings. They don't adjust anything but are interesting to look at. My V-6 didn't show these settings until I got my replacement head unit.

I just picked my 2011 up tonight. Was having problems with the head unit showing AV Off, but unit radio was playing.

I now have a ride height and sport suspension choice that have do nothing and the phone repeating the caller's name is gone. "Call Joe Smith, work" just repeats "Call work".

Guess I will call them back in the morning.

Wow it looks like all the replacement head units have the same problem. You probably also lost the compass and XM displays in the center display. I'm guessing you also lost the auto seat and steering wheel on entrance/exit settings. You can fix some of that by checking Timeout's post in the "Audio problem" thread of this forum.

I want the name repeat back. My dealer ordered a second replacement head unit and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Don't waste your time calling your dealer. They are probably as clueless as my dealer.

The Genesis w/Tech package and every Equus sold in USA have the same Head Unit model. Those ride height and sport suspension choices are meant for the Equus.
But, for some reason, head units are coming from factory with these suspension choices enabled and the options of easy access for seat and steering wheel for the Genesis Tech package disabled.

But, below are the steps to hide the ride height and sport suspension choices and unhide the easy access ones.

-Go to ENG menu (by pressing these buttons simultaneously: Disc/AUX, Navi/Menu, Back and the Volume Knob on the DVD player).

-Go to the "Software Update" submenu and selet "To full ENG full mode". When you select it, it prompts for a key code.

-If you have the old head unit with old NAV maps (2009 and 2010), first try entering ##0324#0704## as key code.

-If you have a newer head unit (2011 or later) or upgraded the NAV maps, enter 0324 as key code. Once you enter the code, on the left hand side there will be few more menu items that make up the full engineering mode.

-Navigate to: "Variant -> System Variant Settings". Then, you disable "ECS Height", "ECS Suspension" and enable "Steering Easy Ac." and "Seat Easy Access".

About the voice command repeating the caller's name. I'm not sure if that option is in Variant Settings. I haven't had the time to investigate this further. You could try looking for that option if you want but, be careful with messing around with some of the settings in there. I do remember seeing in there some options like erasing the hard drive and NAV maps, resetting memory and other stuff that would probably cause harm to your system.

We need to figure out how to get the name repeat back as well as the XM channel and compass in back on the center display. I will love this car if I get this stuff working.

When my dealer swapped out the head unit I didn't realize that the DVD was part of it and they took 6 of my disk. When I went back to them they said oh well..

I hadn't paid attention to this until today, but my unit isn't repeating names, either. It used to, though. I also like having voice confirmation that the correct number's being dialed. More than a few times I've called someone by mistake.

Waveman: I am assuming you replaced your head unit which caused you to lose the name repeat function. Did you lose the XM station and compass on the center display?

SeattleGenesis: I lost my DVD-A version of the Beatles Love album the same way. I loved that thing.

That's the odd part: nothing's been replaced, and as far as I know, the dealer has never updated the software and/or firmware. Now, I could be wrong about the repeat feature working, but I swear that at one point if I said "Call Jim Smith home" it would say "Jim Smith home" - now it just says "home." I'm going to check all the settings, too.
