Hello Gents and Ladies,

Considering a Genesis again. I considered it last time in 2013 but decided I always wanted a diesel engine and Genesis was a little out of price range.

I will miss the 38mpg in the city of the TDI but VW wants to pay me $700 more than I paid for it and I have driven it 3 years and 30k miles. I digress.

Does anyone happen to have or had both of these cars? Curious about a comparison.

I will probably look for a used 2015 without any packages because I am not sure I want the sunroof. Seems to be rattling for many here and the one on my VW has rattled since I bought it and VW dealer can't find the rattle. Sunroofs just seem to have issues across many brands.

My current car does not have any of the items in the signature package so I don't guess I will miss any of it. I really wanted blind spot monitoring, though. Also, you don't get the simple guidelines on backup camera without the signature package? That seems odd to me?

Signature Package:

Power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof
Integrated Memory System (IMS)
Power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel
Auto-dimming outside mirrors
Blind Spot Detection/Rear Cross-traffic Alert
Lexicon® 14-speaker Discrete Logic 7® surround sound audio
LED fog lights
Parking guidelines for rearview camera
Power rear sunshade and manual rear side shades
Ventilated front seats.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Well the Genesis is quite a different car than the Passat, a more lateral move would be to an Accord or even a loaded Sonata. You will be going from a front drive mid-size mainstream car to a rear drive luxury car. Nothing wrong with that but make sure it is what you want, the Genesis is quite a bit larger than the Passat and as you noted your mileage will drop nearly in half. I recently had a rental Passat and drove it 500 miles in one week so got pretty familiar with it. Different than the Genesis for sure.

Regarding the signature package you may want to go for it, on the used market options hardly cost more than the base cars and actually it might be hard to find base cars. The sunroof can be an issue but I think it might be overblown, drive the car you are considering and see for yourself. My sunroof rattles sometimes but what is odd is that it seems to be settling in, it made more noise a few thousand miles ago and now at 10k miles it is only intermittent. Odd but it has not bugged me enough to take it in yet. Overall I like having the roof and the other options, I have the tech package which is above signature. Heck if I did it all again I would probably get the ultimate model.

Thanks. I appreciate the reply. I realize it is a different beast than the passat but so far, nothing I have driven has the in cabin spacious feeling and backseat room as the passat.

Also, as close to 25k in price as I can get is the goal.

I guess my #1 plan as a replacement for passat was in car space. Passat is huge inside based on size of car.

Drove a Camry - only an inch smaller in cabin space vs Passat - seemed way smaller.

Drove a 2016 Chevy Impala - Much larger car..Interior still seemed about same as VW.

Even drove a 2016 Ford Edge - Bigger interior but the cockpit style made my legs feel cramped.

Going to drive a Genesis and a Subaru Legacy this week.

Genesis is definitely the top of the heap in what I am looking for as far as luxury but I should be able to find one in mid to high 20's.

Also, how do people feel about purchasing a non-certified Genesis? Is warranty really any better if it is low miles already?

Here a couple of examples of what is close to me. Seems, from my findings, you do pay about a 2 to 3k premium for anything with signature package.

Be sure that whatever used car you get has maintenance records to substantiate any future warranty claim. The cars you listed are all over $5g in excess of your price point.

Good Point! What does Hyundai require to honor 100k warranty? I assume they are very strict?

If I decide I want Genesis, I am hoping to find one listed at 29k and get it for closer to 26k.
*fingers crossed*

If you got the TDI for gas mileage purposes, be prepared for a realistic 19-21 mpg (and worse for city driving, more like 16 mpg) with the Genesis 3.8 engine.

The Genesis for me has been worse than the Chrysler 300C (3.6L) by about 1 mpg - and the Chrysler is a fat pig by all accounts.

Check out fuelly.com to get an impression on what to expect vs the TDI engine.

I looked at the 2016 VW Passat and when VW refused to build me one with beige seats and a blue exterior I moved on.

I don't get it....He doesn't know what he wants.........Subaru - VW Passat- Genesis
ALL completely different cars

To clarify, I am basing my choice on a large spacious cabin and big backseat. Everything else would be Lagniappe. I realize the Genesis is the outlier in my choices but if I find the right deal on a used one it could happen.

Funny thing: I looked at a Subaru Outback - Volvo XC90 - Lincoln MKZ - VW Passat - VW Golf R - and a few others. They may not seem "equal" or even adjacent, but my criteria were based on available safety features (ACC, BSM, AEB, etc.) as well as amenities and spaciousness (except the Golf R) within a specified lease budget. They all fit, and some vehicles were eliminated based on lease rates, lack of refinement (Subaru interior - seems like a 1980's VW), lack of willingness of the manufacturers to give me what I want (i.e. VW won't offer a beige interior with a blue exterior).

I get his/her approach - I looked for 6 months before my previous lease ended (in order to be able to custom order a new vehicle) until I decided to get the Genesis - and I looked at and drove at least 30 different cars/crossovers.

If your criteria is large cabin and back seat room, you should look at full size cars like the Avalon, Azera and Kia Cadenza as well. No sense paying for rear drive and other "premium" features if simply large space is the primary concern. You will probably get better mileage as well with one of the large front drive cars that are a bit lighter and have slightly smaller V6 engines compared to the Genesis.

I would stick with the Passat if I were you..I passed on a TDI touareg for my genny and even though the genny is a nice car I kick myself for not following my gut

VW has great cars. I owned a golf, a Jetta, a GTI and a CC. Wonderful engineering (Yeah, they lied a bit and I could not believe that company would do it...but I'm sure it's not the only one).
The Passat does have huge leg room. I dare to say that it might have even more leg room than the Genesis..... but it's in a different segment. Apples and bananas....

A Toureg and Genesis are such different vehicles. I'm sure the upcoming SUVs from Genesis Motors will be very impressive...

I like a lot of Volkswagen products myself. My wife and I have owned a couple of Passats over the years as well. And a Jetta... Even an Audi - which is sort of technically a Volkswagen - right? But you're right - the Genesis is in a bit of a different league. It's much more of a luxury car than the Passat is. I think Volkswagen has to keep things simple otherwise it would cause problems for their more expensive Audi brand...

Found a new 2015 ultimate 3.8 RWD near me for 35k. You think they will discount any further since it is almost a 2 year old new car?

That's almost $16k off - they must be losing money on this already ... Can't hurt to ask though, worst they can do is say "No". I'd make a reasonable offer and see if they bite ...

I am going to call tomorrow. What is reasonable offer on what seems to a big discount already?

The price seems right so why not try some smaller stuff. Perhaps negotiate the version 10 map update for the Nav? All Weather floor mats? I negotiated the rear rubber cargo mat without knowing the one in the car is rubber on the flip side. So I talked them into getting me the wiring harness for the illuminated door sills.

Maybe a wing with installation? Never hurts to ask. Cause once you sign, everything goes out the window.

I'd call and offer $34k, and see how they react. with the G80 coming in a few weeks, they might just want to get rid of the 2015 on the lot, since the G80 will make it look really old. Be prepared for them to turn you down, but you can always pay the $35k after asking. I agree with the previous poster, if they won't budge on the price ask for the latest version map upgrade, the map and associated software on the 2015 are crap compared to the newest release - improvements in map data, 3D views, better voice recognition ... worth asking for.

Wings cost them almost nothing (the car may have them already), installs in no time.

And get the extras in writing - before you sign.
