  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Volvo capping speed on its vehicles in bid to reduce traffic deaths to zero

Swedish car-maker Volvo said on Monday that it will introduce a 180kph (112mph) speed limiter on all new vehicles as it seeks to enhance safety credentials.
...
Samuelsson said that in addition to the speed cap, it is planned to deploy technology using cameras that monitor the driver’s state and attentiveness. That will prevent people from driving while distracted or intoxicated, which are the two other big factors in accidents.
So-ooo, big brother is coming into your car.

yeah, So I remember back in the 1980s, the NHTSA created the 85 mph speedometer law and vehicle manufactures capped the Speedo's on cars at 85mph in a supposed effort to reduce speed and increase mpg (this plan was sparked by the oil embargo in the 1970s), the intent was to conserve fuel use based on the belief that 40-55mph yielded the highest mpg, and the belief that people seeing their speedo tacked at 85 mph would back off the speed believing they were driving too fast.

needless to say neither idea held any real merit and the law was reversed before the end of Reagan's first term, though most manufacturers maintained the 85mph speedos through the 1980s until the specific models next generation redesign came to market.

pretty sure this idea by Volvo will work about as well.

I think it is more of a publicity stunt that truly caring about deaths. While speed can be a factor, most are in the 60 to 75 range in places you should be doing 40. There are many statistics available, but one big thing lacking is, what speed? How far over?

Look at the facts. How often do you drive faster than 112 mph? Rare, if ever for most drivers. Before I moved, there was one safe place I could hit triple digits once in a while for about a mile. Only twice in the past 15 years have I gone past 112 and only briefly. While I don't like big brother controls, this really will not affect me and probably 98% of all drivers. Few of us exceed even 85 very often, but that might be the nest step.

pretty sure no one here will be able to access your C: drive. 😆

the problem really isn't "speed" though, the problem is differences in speed between drivers. most major accidents are the result of one driver going faster or slower than the flow of traffic and causing others to react to them.

my daughter is getting close to the permit age now, in another 4 months, and she has been very inquisitive when I drive her to and from school, and am trying to get her into the habit of watching everything going on around her, and I point out multiple times on our 10 mile commute to her school that "one" driver that is causing issues for everyone else.

that "one" driver that just had to rush to the front of the line of traffic, then at the last second as the lane is ending or merging force themselves in front of someone else, even though there were no cars behind that car they just cut off for 300 yards.

that "one" guy zipping in an out of lanes and crossing in and out of the double yellows for the car pool lane so that he can be the first car to the red light at the off ramp.

that "one" guy doing 45mph in the passing lane causing everyone to have to go around him

that "one" guy that keeps tapping their brakes to keep the car at 65mph, because they don't understand how to maintain speed with the gas pedal.

that "one" guy that tries to pass everyone on the right in the merging lane every time one opens.

that "one" guy that believes for some reason that you have the ability to go faster than the vehicles in front of you so he is so close to your rear end that he can read your GPS screen.
