  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Vroom Lease Buyout Quote

That's surprising, I drove a GTI recently and it was pretty fun, tossable and noticeably lighter than the G70. I figured the R would just be ratcheting that up a notch. What didn't you like about it?
Actually, until I drove the G70, I liked pretty much everything about the R (just like I'd liked pretty much everything about the 3 GTIs I'd owned before the R ;)). But the G70 just outshines the R in every way that's important to me:

  • It's faster, and more responsive to the pedal at every speed, especially in sport mode.
  • It handles better; there are curves where 55 was really pushing the limit with the R that the G70 handles easily at 70.
  • It's more comfortable.
  • The build quality is much better.
  • It's much better-looking.

On the other hand, in the R's favor:

  • It has a lot more rear seat room; full-size people (like my 6' 2" 250 lb. brother-in-law) were perfectly comfortable back there.
  • It's got a ton more cargo room; with the rear seats folded down, there's enough room behind the front seats to move the entire contents of a small apartment (minus a couch and an armchair).
  • It's got better visibility all around; there's a lot of glass (although the right rear quarter still has a fairly big blind spot).
  • It gets better gas mileage (I averaged about 23 mpg mixed versus the 19 or so I get with the G70).

I guess it comes down to what's important to you in a car; I loved my R (and the GTIs) for its combination of performance and utility, but in terms of driving fun, comfort, and esthetics, it doesn't stack up to the G70. (Of course, it also cost me almost $11K less than the G70, so there's that.)

My 20 G80 Sport awd 5100 miles is listed around $50K for trade in. I was offered $43K in Jan at 2 dealerships. Crazy! Now if I can only find a car that I want...

That's really the question... I've convinced myself I want to go back to a manual, but at the same time I've been spoiled by the refinement and tech in the G70, so it's slim pickings to say the least when trying to balance those two things.
