In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. So, now that it's 70-75 outside, I have started to experience intermittent sound again. When listening to music at a louder note (20+ volume - maybe settings pumped up/surround?) The entire system will lock up and not output any sound. I had my amplifier replaced before winter came along and that seemed to have fix the problem, but it has now resurfaced. From what I understand, the problem is the amplifier overheating.

Does anyone have similar issues?

Which V8 do you have, base model or tech? 2009 or 2010?

I had mine do the same thing last summer a couple of times. Happens when I'm really cranking it loud, and about 30 minutes later, the system basically resets, and then comes back at about 50% volume until it cools down.

I'll see what happens this summer if it even does it again.

09' Tech

It does revert to a "safe mode" at about half volume until I reset the car after the sound returns

Wow. That's not good.
Does anyone know where the amplifier is located?
Adding extra fans would probably help the amplifier from overheating.

The amp is in the trunk near the battery.

Thanks for the tip, TJ. :)
I wanna see how it looks like. I guess I'll lift that rubber trunk mat and see what's underneath for the first time.

Are there any visible heat sinks external to the amp that one could aim a fan at? There are plenty of 12V DC fans available that are normally used in computers.

I never experienced this problem in my Genesis, even when temperatures were up in the 90's. Of course, I generally don't run the audio system at 20+ level either...;)

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but mine started to have this intermittent audio problem.
My car was in the garage for about a month, since I've been using my company vehicle.

Car started up no problem, but as I start listening to the music, the sound basically mutes for about 5 seconds and then comes on again.
Happens every 4~5 min or so. Sometimes happens 3 times in a row, 2 min in between.

It's really starting to annoy me.
And I'm sure it's not because it's over heated, because this also happens in the morning right after I pull my car out of the garage.
And I have this feeling that it won't happen when I go to the dealer.

Did anyone troubleshoot this problem thru the dealer? Did they replace the amp?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

EDIT: Oh, and this is at volume level 8~10

@nearH2O:
the same thing happened to me! volume wasn't high either ...... I thought it was my XM reception ....
Same here temperature wise, My garage is kept at 76-78 before I drive it out into the heat.

Wow, this is exactly what mine has started doing the past few weeks. I do tend to listen to it more in the 20-ish range, but there's no way the amp is overheating at this point (car is garaged constantly unless I'm going to-from home to office). For me, it's so intermittent that I decided it would be a waste of time to take it to the dealership for diagnosis. Would definitely be interested to know if anyone has had this issue and what the fix was.

Wow, looks like quite a few owners are experiencing the same thing.
Mine does this like every few minutes, so it should be easy to show it to the dealer.
This is freaking annoying. I really want to stay away from replacing the whole amplifier. :(

I did a little experimenting on my last few drives, and believe that this issue may be limited to AM/FM mode only (at least for my car). Have you guys noticed whether or not this is happening only with regard to radio? If so, it could just be the radio tuner going bad.

I had a similar incident the other day in very warm weather with the Bluetooth going in and out. My call was bouncing between the car and the phone and back.

Mine is doing the same thing on DVD/CD and MP3(AUX). Haven't tried radio channels, but I don't listen to em anyway.
I think it's the amplifier itself.

For me it was XM (satellite radio)

I checked and I still have my XM subscription.

Me too! I experienced the same thing today when I was talking over the Bluetooth connection.
I think it may be the heat after all. We had a severe thunderstorm last night and temperature dropped quite a bit to 72*
Driving last night around 1AM, there was no drop in sound at all.
This morning, however, it started again. But the interval is much longer today. Probably about 7~8 min.

Since the Lexicon system was one of the main reason I went with the Genesis, this issue is bugging the hell out of me.
I'd rather stick with my amplifier than switching out with a refurbished one, so I'll see if this issue goes away by itself. I'm even prepared to install a cooling fan near the amplifier if necessary.

I'll give it a couple more weeks, and if the issue is still there, I guess I have no choice but to go to the dealer. :fingers crossed:

What really bugs me is that I'm already on my second amplifier . The first one failed within three months of buying the car and got replaced in early 2009. I'm not too sure about the heat hypothesis, since my first amp pulled these stunts in the dead of winter. Granted, Atlanta isn't exactly Siberia but even here January is cold-ish. :D

I've experienced this same problem as well. I chopped it up to the thermal protection system kicking in. Various amps and electronic systems have something like this to protect damage to the circuitry. The amp is in an enclosed space and it’s one that is driving multiple channels I can understand that it likely runs very hot (which is probably doomed to eventual failure if you live in hot climates and listen to it high volumes).

Fans would likely reduce this problem, if done correctly. Opening up the amp area will also help, but will not be pleasing to the eye. Lexicon probably never ran tests with the amp sitting in a hot car for hours then driven at high volumes for extended periods of time…and if they did they likely thought the demographic purchasing the car would not listen it at high volumes for any extended period of time (doubt that).

The fix would have to come from Lexicon and would likely be on a later release of the car based on feedback from Hyundai.

If you want to listen to it loud on a regular basis, I would look into seeing what you can do in the after market.

I just got my car back from the dealer today in regards to this problem. There is no fix for this yet according to them via Hyundai. Hyundai has engineers that are looking into this right now and haven't found a solution yet. They have tried everything from new amps, head units, new rear windshields (where the antenna is) and no of these have fixed the problem. The servive manager thinks it is a software problem. There was an engineer at the dealership today and he also looked at my car. They have had alot of Genesis owners report this problem and are very aware of it. They are supposed to get back to me and I will let all of you know when and what the "fix" is for this issue.

I run into this issue even at low volumes and it doesn't matter if i'm listening to XM, FM, CD etc... I also drop calls via the blue tooth connection when the amp cuts out.

Hope this helps.
