Warm weather = Intermittent Sound?

I just got my car back from the dealer today in regards to this problem. There is no fix for this yet according to them via Hyundai. Hyundai has engineers that are looking into this right now and haven't found a solution yet. They have tried everything from new amps, head units, new rear windshields (where the antenna is) and no of these have fixed the problem. The servive manager thinks it is a software problem. There was an engineer at the dealership today and he also looked at my car. They have had alot of Genesis owners report this problem and are very aware of it. They are supposed to get back to me and I will let all of you know when and what the "fix" is for this issue.

I run into this issue even at low volumes and it doesn't matter if i'm listening to XM, FM, CD etc... I also drop calls via the blue tooth connection when the amp cuts out.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your story, Carl.
Exactly what I'm experiencing right now.
Never had this problem during winter or spring, but all of a sudden started acting up after a month of storage(was stored during the heat wave).
Happens as often as every couple minutes to once every ten min.

If it's a software bug, fans wouldn't do any good. :(
I hope they come up with a solution.
It's too good a system to give up.

Dan

I don't think it's a software issue, but even if it is, it should be a very easy fix for the developers.
It's not like the amplifier's output/input is controlled by a very complicated application or anything.
What I'm afraid is that it could be a major design flaw.

If Hyundai blames 'heat' for this issue, I'm going to install dual fans to keep the temperature down and see what it does.

This has been covered before... it seems to be a phantom problem. My car does it every once in a great while.... I'd say about 1 month ago I had intermittent sound that would go in and out 3 or 4 times per day for a couple days. It has corrected itself by the graces of the Genesi God and hasn't come back.... or if it does, it only happens one time.

I will note, that we have had 100+ degree weather days here in New England and I heard the fan, or what I think was a fan sounds coming from the amp area... I was messing around with my aftermarket sub so my head was in that general direction. I haven't had any problems while this extreme heat is around.

i haven't had any issues with this through the last few weeks here in NJ during the heat wave we been having. Now in the last few days it happens a few times.... I'm not liking the way this is starting to go:(

Me neither. I am generally lucky in terms of car ownership experience, but this one found me. :(
Good thing it's 'intermittent", not permanent.
If it was a permanent failure, replacing an amp won't be a problem when the car's under warranty, but what happens when the warranty runs out?
One thing I can tell you; that amp won't be cheap. At all.

Dan

If you want to listen to it loud on a regular basis, I would look into seeing what you can do in the after market.

Thing is, there is no simple aftermarket solution that can substitute the Lexicon system.
Our stock Lex is tuned professionally by engineers.(My source says he saw Bosch engineers tuning the Lexicon system on the Genesis during development process)

Without proper equipment, knowledge, and time, it'll be very hard to setup a system this balanced.
HU is integrated into the whole system, amplifier is processing multiple channels and has its own digital processor, so I have no idea what other amplifier/HU combo can mimic the system we currently have.

Like I said, Lexicon was a BIG reason why I chose the Genesis. If I had to give it up, I might as well give up the whole car.
Yes, sound system is that important to me. :)

Dan

Wow. That's not good.
Does anyone know where the amplifier is located?
Adding extra fans would probably help the amplifier from overheating.

Dan

Working on a project this weekend that brought me to this fine specimen.

Note in two of the pics the air vent. I guess it is triggered and easily opens to draw air

I haven't seen the amplifier yet, and your pics give me a good idea how I should tackle this mod.

Let us know if you come up with a brilliant idea to use that air vent as a cooling source.

Thanks,

It's been 10 days since my car started to have this intermittent sound issue, and it's not getting any better.
Doesn't matter what time of day or temperature it is outside.. It happens randomly.

On my recent road trip, it acted fine for about an hour and then exhibits the problem all of a sudden for 4~5 times in a row within a 10min time frame,
then it's okay for about half an hour again.

My patience is running thin.
I'm very happy with Lexicon's sound quality, but I'm very disappointed with the quality control of the system in general.

No wonder why Harman International is pulling the plug from the car audio business. Ugh.

Sounds like you'll be visiting the dealership. I wonder how hard you can press them for a "brand new" amp and not a refurbished one? Why in all the world would they put refurbished stuff back into a car that isn't that old. Where else do they use this amp I wonder?

Yeah, that's the main reason why I'm trying not to go to the dealer and hoping for the issue to go away by itself.
I guess I'll try the power cycle by pulling the battery.

Didn't have much luck with the reset, so I went to the dealer to have the amplifier replaced.
Service department was aware of the issue having seen a few vehicles with the same symptom.
Luckily, they already ordered several amplifiers and had 1 left for a direct replacement.
30 minutes later it was all done and it seems to work fine.. for now at least.

As most of us are aware, the XM radio ID is stored in the amplifier, so all my XM radio subscription including the Navtraffic was gone.
Called XM to have it transferred over to my new amplifier and the car is sitting on the parking lot running for the radio activation.

Hopefully this amplifier works fine, as I wish to keep the car for a long time.

Those of you who're having the same problem, have your amplifier replaced at your local dealer, as it seems to be the only way to fix the issue.

I have had the same problem with my sound system. On a few occassions I had no sound at all but once I restarted the engine everything was fine. It really was not a big problem because it only happened 3 times within a one month period. The next time it happened I was near the dealership and showed them the problem. They told me that my amp was overheating and needed to be replaced. Waited 3 weeks for a new amp, and now it is much worse the sound goes out every 5 minutes and knocks out my hands free connection. The dealer claims that I now need a new radio, that is on order, it takes 3 weeks to get the part from Korea. I am starting to feel that I should have left this alone, they have made the problem worse. Oh by the way the amp is not new it is reconditioned.

Exactly the same problem I've had.
The dealer is wrong. You DO NOT NEED A NEW RADIO. It's the amplifier.
Did you get your XM/NavTraffic to work?
I'm having problems getting XM to work on my new(refurbished) amp.

The dealer just put in a new radio and it is doing the same thing, the system worked better with the orginal amp and radio. In fact now the XM radio will not work properly. It cuts off and returns to station 0 and will not move to any other station unless I turn the engine off. The dealer is really at a lost to figure out what the problem is. He even suggested that maybe my phone was the problem. I told him that I have had this phone for a year and it has worked well in my Genesis, why would it suddenly not be compatible. I cannot use my hands free because it cuts off whenever the radio cuts off which is every 3 minutes.
