Warning lamp for continuous seat belts

The seat belt indicator lamp remains illuminated and the signal alarm sounds continuously without anyone in the front passenger seat. It can only be turned off by engaging the seat belt. A diagnosis and repair solution will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I assume these cars have weight sensors in the seat that can see if someone is in the passenger seat or not. If you are putting anything in the passenger seat that is reasonably heavy that might be the problem, if there's nothing there then the sensor could be stuck on. unfortunately I dont have any experience with fixing it.

As edizzle stated. They use a weight system to detect the passenger, or anything that falls within the programmed weight range.

If you have nothing on the seat and this is occurring you likely need to have the sensors recalibrated at the dealership. Likely a 1 hour service fee if out of warranty.

If you have stuff on the seat either connect the seat belt or buy a seat belt bypass on eBay.

Sometimes I put my personal, and work cell phone in the passenger seat when I get off work. The light comes on until I remove one of them and place it in the cup holder. I don't even think the two phones together weigh one pound. Maybe it is one pound. Either way, doesn't take much for the light to come on it seems.

that means it is out of calibration. it should not turn on the airbag or seatbelt chime unless the weight exceeds the programmed amount,

according to Hyundai:

13.23lbs (6kg) is the minimum weight for the seat belt light
94.79lbs (43kg) is the minimum weight range for the airbag to activate.

This is their range for all their vehicles.

the seat can get out of calibration if:

a heavy weight (not human) exceeding 31kg is placed on the seat for a prolonged period of time, as the weight would be dead center on the seat and not properly distributed over the whole seat.

the seat is removed and/or replaced without the battery being disconnected

the seat or seat frame have become damaged in any fashion (i.e. car accident).


There is a specific process involved in recalibrating the Occupant Sensors, it requires the dealer GDS data link tool, some specifically designed weights that mimic a person in the seat at various weights from a car seat to a child, to a young adult, and an oversized adult. The weight range from 6kg (13.23lbs) to 115kg (253.53lbs).

Take the car to the dealer and have the seat calibrated, you could be endangering your passengers if you are in an accident and the seat is mis-calibrated, as the airbag my not go off when it should or it may go off when it should not.
