  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I apologize if something like this has already been asked. I used the search function but nothing stuck out to me.

I am the second owner of a beautiful 2018 G80 Sport 3.3T at just a smidge over 45,000 miles. The "copper" trim around the side windows is tarnishing, and my wheels are peeling. Definitely both rear wheels. possibly the front two as well...

I called the "local" genesis dealer (35 miles away ) and explained that I want to clear up all outstanding recalls and take care of said warranty issue.

The guy on the phone wouldn't give me any firm answer, which is understandable. But was telling me they might not do anything because its over 3 years/ 36K miles, and that its not a safety issue. I promptly told him it was a workmanship issue, and at the risk of sounding righteously indignant I asked if they stand behind their product. LOL

Sorry for prattling on and sounding annoying. I am just SUPER bummed out over my beautiful new (to me) car having these embarrassing defects.

Where did he get this number from? What are my options...? I've seen forum members posting about having their copper window trim replaced; and wheels as well! But I assume they were the first owners of brand new models?

Note: I have a 3rd party extended warranty... but I'd rather not go there yet if I don't have to.

Pics if anyone is interested.

I appreciate your quick answer and honesty. I'll have to look it over. It seems the only thing that transfers is the limited powertrain? Man that's a bummer. Well.. going thru a 3rd party warranty will be a new challenge for me. Thanks again.

Depending on who you have and which level of coverage you got, they are usually decent to work with. Ive had a couple and never had an issue getting warranty work covered.

The "dark chrome" issue, if that is what your trim is called, has been noted here many times. Many have had the dealer address it with polish which removes the dark and leaves them with bright trim. For those who do not mind the different trim appearance it could be your answer. The wheels can be addressed by a wheel shop, at your expense. All this is if the warranty is not a satisfactory response.

That's a good point. Seems like a crap retort from Hyundai/Genesis. We'll see how the warranty company handles it I guess... I honestly thought the warranty coverage carried over for a short while. Feel a little foolish for my long OP. Oh well. Live and learn. Thanks for your help!

The 5 year 60k warranty certainly does transfer like any other car. Its the 10/100k powertrain the doesnt transfer. The reason they are denying the claim is because despite genesis falsely advertising 5/60 bumper to bumper coverage, there are exclusions like paint, which is only covered for 3/36 and ac refrigerant only covered for 12 months (that is really insane, if the refrigerant leaks out in month 13 its on you!). I would argue that the defects you are seeing are not paint related.

You make a good point. I can see the chrome trim not being considered paint related. But the wheels leave me thinking they might call it paint..

If not paint, what is it? The wheels do have a clear coating.

I don't know what the trim is but if the tarnish is from a defect of clear coat it would be difficult to claim. If it is electroplating I agree, you have a case.

Yeah I feel like there will be a lot of semantics involved. I wish I had read about appearance issues like this before I purchased. Still a fun car I guess.

Let them explain away the semantics. If there's an arbitration clause in the warranty agreement invoke it. Most of them indicate that the business will pay filing fees and costs.

I can't believe I never updated this. I was still within the 5y/60k warranty. I had all 4 wheels replaced by a local Hyundai dealership and they replaced all of the dark chrome trim around the windows. All for $0 to me. And guess what?! Since then, all the trim around the windows has "tarnished" again, arguably to a worse state than before. Wheels look okay though. Still love the car though.
