If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone -

I purchased a used Genesis with 3800mi on it from a private party. They owned the car for 3 months or so and then had to sell it. I was wondering on what the transfer process was like for the warranty. I should have figured this out before I bought the car, but figured the warranty just stayed with the car.

The car has the 5/60,000 and the 10/100,000.

I've read that once the car is sold as "used" that the 10/100,000 is reduced down to 5/60,000. Is that correct? If so, do you think I could still somehow get in on buying an extended warranty? The car is sooooo new!

Let me know what you guys/gas know. Thanks,

The 10/100 warranty is powertrain -- that is non-transferable, so if you purchased used, you "only" get the 5/60 bumper-to-bumper warranty. The 5yrs of course starts from the original in-service date.

My personal opinions is, third party extended warranties are useless - they have so many creative ways to deny coverage, it's hardly worth the trouble. Then again, I rarely keep a vehicle long enough to make a dent in the factory warranty. If you plan on keeping it years and years, it might be worth contacting a dealer to see if you are eligible for the Hyundai issued extended warranty.

Congrats on your purchase either way!

Yes the 10/100,000 is reduced down to 5/60,000 in your situation:

"Second and/or subsequent owners have powertrain components coverage under the 5 year / 60,000 mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Excludes coverage for vehicles in commercial use (i.e. taxi, route delivery, delivery service, rental, etc.)."

Yes, you can buy an extended warranty, either from Hyundai or an independent warranty company (both kinds are often sold by Hyundai dealers).

Thats a bummer..... I wish there was some wiggle room on this. Like if the car is 1 years old and has less than 5K on it, or something like that.

Looks like I'm calling the dealer today to see what they say.

Unfortunately the wiggle room is at the dealership. It is called Certified Pre-Owned. There you get the warranty extension and the manufacturer backing. Although, you may get a better deal when you purchase from a non-dealership, you give up some of your long-term protection. No matter how new the car is.

The warranty is offered by the manufacturer, not the dealer. The only wiggle room would be if you purchased an extended warranty.

Only buy a manufacturer extended warranty. I.E., One that says HYUNDAI. You may want to phone Hyundai (in California) at 1-800-924-9279 (I THINK that is correct) to check on how to purchase a Hyundai Extended Warranty. Don't take a dealers word for it.

Not one from the "XXX" Warranty Company (aka Extended Service Contract). Yes, dealers will be more than happy to sell you an extended warranty from these other companies, but like LLT said above, those extended warranties are WORTHLESS. they go out of business quick. They don't pay. The dealership you purchased it from does not care as they were paid boucoup bucks commission to sell you the warranty, and when the company does not pay for repairs, either because they are no longer in business, or because of some loophole they always find, the dealership will tell you that its not the dealerships falt, and that the company took advantage of the dealership.

I see these extended warranties advertised all over the TV and on Radio and in my mailbox. RUN RUN RUN AWAY.

If you MUST have an extended warranty (extended service plan), only buy from the manufacturer (in this case, Hyundai).

I have a friend who is the Service Manager at a dealership (not Hyundai) who tells me that they have all kinds of problems with these aftermarket companies. These companies want the repair shop to use used parts, will not pay for things saying it was caused by damage from a non covered part, etc. etc. etc.

Short Story. When I purchased my Genesis, the F&I guy put a lot of pressure on me to buy an extended warranty (Extended Service Plan). I pointed out to him that the Genesis already comes with a great warranty. Did not matter to him. He gave me all kinds of reasons to buy the extended plan. I had to tell him "What part of NO don't you understand?" BTW, Dealer F&I guys make more money for themselves, and for the dealership, than anyone else at a dealership.

Thanks for the heads up everyone. I called a local Hyundai dealership and they said because the car has so few miles and it is brand new that they would consider selling me the extended warranty which is, 7yr/100,000 for like $1280. I think this is definitely a Hyundai warranty and not a 3rd party one. I will double double double check this though.

I'll let everyone know what happens.

Yes, be certain it is directly from Hyundai Motor America - otherwise, you might as well send me a check for $1,280 and I'll claim to fix anything that comes up. ;)

I once bought a pre-owned Cadillac private party -- had 5,000 miles on it. I was friends with the general manager of our local GM dealership and he put it in the system and certified it for their cost - which provided the same warranty as if I bought it from the dealer. I don't really recall if this is something he did just for me or if it's common practice, but it's something you might check into.

Either way, don't be pressured into an aftermarket warranty - can't stress that enough.

You are SOL on 10/10000. And if you are a female, don't get married and change your name during that 10years. I was behind a poor soul who was denied warranty coverage because her name did not match that of the original owner. She got married in year 5 and did not notify Hyundai of her name change.

Yes, Hyundai is that picky. They offer the 10/1000 "limited" warranty as a marketing gimmick, knowing only a small minority of owners will keep the car that long. Get your kicks in before 60K, then get out.

Hyundai makes great cars with great initial value. Unfortunately Hyundai, and especially Hyundai North America makes up for the low margins on that value by ripping us off at every opportunity - $300 map updates are a prime example.

I have done a 5-year total cost of ownership study, taking into account the greedy dealership relationship required to stay under warranty - and I would have been better off buying a more expensive car with more reasonable dealer support - like Lexus.

Your story about the owner name change warranty denial sounds like a big bag of baloney to me. You must be a Lexus salesman.

I don't doubt the story. But I am sure that upon proof of name change they honored the warranty. Do you expect Hyundai to just take someone's word for it, with any documentation, that they changed their name?
