  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I bought my 2013 rspec in may. Since then I have only listened to AM and XM radio.

It's rare that I can't find one of the talk shows i prefer in xm (they are in commercial break) so I sometimes go to the music channels.

They sounded merely OK. In all honesty, my 09 Camry XLE v6's JBL sound system sounded much better. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality, but was prepared to live with it since I liked the rest of the car, and don't listen to too much music anyways.

A few weeks back I bought a 16gb sandisk flash drive and filled it with high quality (little to no compression) music. I left it plugged into the back of my tower and forgot about it. Today I happened to see the drive, and grabbed it.

Plugged it into the port in the car, and turned it on.

I certainly imagine that the people who designed this car envisioned mild mannered people buying this car and listening to classic rock, or maybe some classical music at reasonable levels.

I was cranking Rammstein at level 40 with no distortion. the mirrors were shaking so bad everything was blurry. I can personally attest that the Lexicon sound system can handle Hardcore German Industrial metal with no problems. My Camry could never come close to sounding this good. The sound was so full and complete. The Camry would get tinny at louder volumes.
I was laughing like a little girl with excitement at how damn good this stereo sounds.
I have only had her for 5 months, but after discovering how good it sounds when sourced with high quality audio I was as excited as the day I drove her off the lot. It was so loud and complete sounding that I did not hear or feel the phone in my pocket ring & vibrate and missed a call. It took about 30 min for my ears to stop ringing. (it took 4 days for them to stop ringing after the actual Rammstein show)

Just as I don't bury my foot to the floor every day, I don't plan on listening to the stereo that loud every day. But like the gas pedal response, it sure is comforting to know you have it there if you want to use it.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I been using a 16 gig micro usb since fall of 2010 with recordings at 320k and I totally agree with you. The Lexicon in the Genesis excels in sound detail. Its made by Harmon the same company that made the units in my Mercedes, but the Lexicon in the Genny is better.

They are made by the same folks who make the units for Rolls Royce. didn't know they made units for Mercedes tho. First time I've seen this.

Harmon-Kardon is the parent company of Lexicon. Harmon-Kardon make some of the better audio systems in the world and Lexicon is like their "Luxury" division if you will.

The only two cars in the world to have the Lexicon 17 speaker surround sound system is the Genesis and the Rolls Royce. It was a major selling feature when the car first landed on lots.

If you want to hear the full benefit of the 17-Speaker Lexicon system, get some DVD-A music recorded in 5 or 7 channel discrete surround sound. Unfortunately, not a lot of music is recorded that way.

If you play regular stereo music from a CD/USB/iPod etc, the Lexicon will synthesize the rear channels and create surround sound for your with time delay and reverb technology (also available in the 14-speaker Lexicon system).

As you've discovered, the quality of XM is very poor because it's highly compressed. Even talk channels are noticeably worse than FM. I listen to them because there's a lot of choices, but I almost never turn to the XM music channels.

im in the same boat. I listen for the talk.
i fly over 200k miles a year and drive rental cars far more than my own. I have a portable XM that i take with me so i dont have to hunt for channels constantly.
rental cars dont have the best stereos (at least the ones i am allowed to rent) so the music quality isnt noticeable until i am in my car.

it seems some talk stations are compressed more than others. for example, listen to Opie and Anthony, and its not terrible, then listen to the traffic stations. they are so compressed its almost painful to listen to.

Just a clarification. Harman International Industries is the parent company which contains 15 various divisions (brands) like Lexicon, Harman Kardon, Mark Levinson and JBL.

These are the four brands of Harman's Luxury Auto Group:

JBL Synthesis
Mark Levinson
Revel
Lexicon

Also, I think you can safely bet that the Lexicon audio systems and speaker quality in the Hyundai line differ somewhat from the gear in the $250,000 Rolls Royce Ghost. ,-)

^ For sure. But they do share a backbone. Its kinda like having a conjoined twin. One is, no doubt, better than the other but they do have somethings in common ;)

I only have a couple of DVD-A's and I agree the sound through those 17 speakers is a-ma-zing! I'm especially fond of the Beatles "LOVE" DVD-A. Amazon has a fair selection to choose from and I plan to collect more. They truly bring out the best in our premium system.

per another thread, have wondered about sound quality as well. think waveman is onto something with "XM high compression" comment. also tried some older CDs a few days ago without being too impressed, but they were remasters from old recordings and didn't have wide dynamic range in the original recording.

kf's rammstein comment (rammstein? seriously. :D) inspired a USB test (Klank). zounds. amazing. there's the expected quality. DVD-A is next on the list.

moral: source matters.

Hey now! I happen to like Rammstein....

Source totally matters though. I just got into a fight with XM, so I might be dropping their service anyway.

There is no need for XM radio if you have a smartphone App like InTune radio to BT stream your favorite music and talk stations.

I also tested it with Pantera, White Zombie, and Metallica. works great with them too.

^ I like this guy....

:)

I am not in the likely demographic this car was built for.

It's the first car I have owned where I look back at it every week as I leave at the airport. I smile every time I see it when I return.
