Water pump has started to leak on my 2009 Genesis 4.6 at 107,500 miles. Coolant leaks when engine is running. Does any one know where the water pump is located? Has anyone replaced it? If so how difficult is it to replace it? Any help is appreciated.

Just to give an idea of my tech level previously on my Genesis I have replaced fuel filter, fuel tank air filter and differential oil. Last water pump I replaced was on a Taurus 15 years ago.

Looks like it's behind the top pully, the area where the lower and upper radiator hoses connect. Any thoughts on replacement difficulty? Thank you.

Thank you. Yup, it's usually the labor! I am mustering the courage to attempt it myself. Looks like it's not that difficult because for one thing it's on top/front of the engine and not underneath as it used be on older vehicles.

If coolant leak, you need to check two places. one is the water pump, other one is the thermostat housing.

important: after removing the old water pump and the gasket, you need to polish the engine surface. and then install the new gasket and water pump.( see red line)

Okay. Thank you.
Would thermostat housing leak because it's seal/gasket is worn out?

My car is v6 . I find a v8 engine picture. I teach you how to replace the water pump
1) remove the intake hose( air filter box).

2) remove radiator upper hose and lower hose

3) loose water pump pully 4 bolts( only loose, do not remove)

4) remove the belt. ( use the socket wrench to turn tensioner clock direction to loose the belt and remove the belt.)

5) remove the water pump pulley.

6) remove the water pump bolts.

Thank you very much Airgap540 for the steps. This matches the procedure I got from some one else. So it's reassuring. My pump arrives tomorrow, Friday. Plan to change it over the weekend.

I like the post and the pictures, but the engine does not need to removed right?

No, the engine does not need to be removed.

I teach you how to fill the coolant.
you need 2 persons to do this job. one person is in the car to watch the water temp gauge ( avoid engine over heat). the other person adds coolant.

1) remove the radiator cap. ( press down and turn anti-clock)

2) fill coolant to the radiator full. ( I use another car's picture. All cars are the same, Hyundai, BMW, BENZ...)

3) don't close the radiator cap. start the engine.

4) you will see the air bulbs come out or the coolant overflow. Don't mind it. if the coolant level is low, just add to full. ( FULL is the very import)

3) keep repeat step2 .......I think 3-5 minutes later, the radiator fan will kick in. keep repeat step2..... until you find the air bulbs come out gradually decreases.

4)shut down the engine. fill the radiator with coolant full and then close the radiator cap. (press and turn clock)

5)fill the radiator tank with the coolant a little higher than the max line. ( because some coolant in the tank will be sucked into the radiator when the engine is cold.) (add to the max line is also ok).

6) let the engine cool down for 4-5 hours or overnight.

7)check the coolant level in the radiator tank.
refill the coolant to the max line.

Well, I replaced the water pump w/o hitting any hurdles. It's not too difficult if you know your way around the engine obviously. Did not need to clean the engine surface where pump meets the engine block. There was no build up of any type. I think it's because the type of gasket is used on newer cars. The whole job took 4 hours. Plan to replace the upper and lower radiator hoses before the end of the year.

Thank you for sharing. May you please share the torque value of the water pump bolts and pulley?

....So i started doing some maintance on my 2009 4.6 and as i was doing a flush with distilled water i noticed a leak under my car not coming from the drain plug on the radiator and i never had any leaks or was low on any fluids in the past.....after letting the car cool down and settle i got back to work on it today and noticed that if i squeeze the upper water hose it will start to leak under my car again , so upon removing the top pieces and the drive belt i found the leak coming from under the water pump ( just ordered a new one ) now im on hold til it arrives.......this is an item i never changed and hitting 130k mileage and im the only one ever to work on this car since it had 00001 miles on it lol...

.....well got my new water pump and thermostat put in today, ran some distilled water til my fan came on now I'll let it sit til tomorrow, do another distilled water flush and then it will be ready for some new coolant and than Ill go on to the oil change and my transmission fluid drain than.....
