  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was at a hyundai dealer in Toronto Ontario getting some estimates for the 09 genesis. Curious, do you guys know if the OMVIC and global I fees are legitimate or is it BS.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Thanks to Google, I've divined that the OMVIC fee is $5 CAD per vehicle sale that the dealer pays to the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, something of a dealer association and watchdog. They say the dealer can choose to eat the fee, but since it's only $5, they don't think many buyers will make a big deal of it.

The Global-i thing seems to be an supplemental insurance/serial number marking on the car. Basically, you pay some amount of money, and if your car is ever stolen and is declared a complete loss, then you get something on the order of $4K toward a new vehicle at the dealer you purchased it from. It's totally separate from the insurance payout. But I read that it's hard to meet the conditions for the payout, and if the car is recovered and not a total loss, the payout is probably less or about the same as you pay for the policy. It sounds like it's one of those things dealers add for markup that most people just go along with, but it's not mandatory.

The $5.00 OMVIC Fee is legitimate.
The Global I fee ($200.00 - $500.00) is a dealer add on that is almost pure profit and can be declined.
